KAREN DENISE HOSEGOOD It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Denise Hosegood (Rymarchuk) on September 13, 2012 at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 55 years. Karen's memory will be cherished by her husband and love of her life, Garth, daughters Alana and Lea, son Evan, mother Geraldine, mother-in-law Maureen, brother Bob (Ursula), sister Debby (Glenn), and sister-in-law Maureen. Karen will be missed by her nephews John, Kyle, Jeremiah (Jackie), Andrew, and Jessie, and niece Kaitlyn. Karen was predeceased by her father Joseph. Karen was born on June 22, 1957 in Regina, Saskatchewan and moved to Winnipeg with her family in 1965. Growing up Karen enjoyed spending summers at Caddy Lake as a Girl Guide and weekends in Portage la Prairie on the potato farm. Karen attended Carpathia School, Sacred Heart Convent, and St. Mary's Academy. Karen went on to graduate from the University of Manitoba with her Bachelor in Education and began her career as an elementary school teacher in 1979 in the Seven Oaks School Division. Throughout her 33 years, Karen taught countless Grade 2 and 3 classes, first at Arthur E. Wright School and then at Ecole Riverbend Community School. Karen was a passionate and dedicated teacher, mentor, and colleague. She loved both the rewards and challenges of teaching and learning with her students. Karen was extremely grateful to her job-sharing partners, Cathy Ratuski and Cheryl Billinkoff for their partnership and friendship over the years. Karen married her soulmate and companion, Garth, on July 12, 1986 and they began their wonderful life together. Karen loved spending time with her family and was extremely proud of her children. Karen enjoyed spending her summers at Gull Lake; gardening, growing tomatoes, watching hummingbirds, and most of all sitting on the dock with Garth. Karen loved her little dogs, Morgan and Lola, as well as cooking, going to Winnipeg Jets games, and celebrating Thanksgiving at the lake. In 2009, Karen received a kidney transplant from her sister Debby, which created an everlasting bond between the two sisters. Karen's transplant was a success and she was extremely grateful and blessed for her rejuvenated health. Karen's family would like to extend a profound appreciation to the Transplant Department at Health Sciences Centre, especially Dr. David Rush for his outstanding care and support, and Marybeth Maher for her friendship. The family would also like to thank the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care unit for their care, compassion, and loving hearts over the past two weeks. A funeral mass and reception will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Bernadette's Parish, 820 Cottonwood Road R2J 1G1. Private interment to follow with family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Transplant Manitoba - Gift of Life Winnipeg Program, Health Sciences Centre GE441-820 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3A 1R9 and sign up to be an organ or tissue donor at SignUpForLife.ca We love you. • The Saint Mary's Academy Class of 1975- We will miss you, Karen, and may God's blessings light up your family. Many of your high school friends remember you fondly and will miss you at future reunions. - Posted by: Anne Wolkenstein-Geall (classmate Saint Mary's) on: Sep 27, 2012

  • Karen and I worked together for three summers at Charleswood Parks & Rec as playground leaders in the mid-seventies. She was a blast!! Loved the crafts, hated the games! She was real no nonsense with the kids and they had great summers with he. She also taught me everything I know about waist-length hair, long nails (real ones!) and the perfect tan. Camping and boating were just a path to a deeper tan and lots of socializing. I was in town last year and bumped into her and the family at Alana's grad, a great surprise. I pray she is with Christ, I know He holds her family in His hands. My love to Garth and the kids. - Posted by: Debbie (Duerksen) Campbell () on: Sep 23, 2012

  • I was so very very saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Hosegood. She was an amazing teacher, the kind every parent would want for their child. We were so very lucky to have her at Ecole Riverbend and she will be truly missed. My thoughts are also with Mrs. Ratuski who lost such a great teaching partner and friend. The days ahead will be hard for all, hopefully memories will provide some comfort. (Gliha Family) - Posted by: Rhonda Gliha () on: Sep 19, 2012

  • Blues for Karen God does not leave us comfortless.--Jane Kenyon The season of your death, morning glories trailed along the wire fence, one tone deeper than the sky. I still go to the telephone to call you, but the lines don't stretch to heaven-- the title of a bad country & western song. How could you die? We weren't done talking yet. So I am trying to call you using the morning glories, whose blue mouths are open to the sky, whose throats are white stars, thinking those tendrils could trellis upward, hand over little green hand, so tenacious, they hang on in any storm, forgetting that the quick slap of frost will put out those blue lights, that the seasons will snap shut like a purse, that this old blue world will keep on spinning, without you By the poet Barbara Crooker - Posted by: A friend from A.E.W. • My daughter was in her class for 2 years (grade 2/3) and she was a wonderful, caring teacher. She made my mother 'Grandma Rose' feel so welcome by inviting her to volunteer in the classroom and that meant the world to her. On behalf of our family, please accept our deepest condolences. - Posted by: Mona Wiggins (my daughter Courtney's gr 2 & 3 teacher) on: Sep 18, 2012

  • To my dear friend Gerry, I cannot think of anything that would be as painful as losing a child. From one mom to another, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your entire family at this sad time. - Posted by: Bonnie Grace (Friend) on: Sep 18, 2012

  • I was the principal at A.E. Wright when Karen was on staff. We worked out a strategy for a job share when the family was starting, after a few years of individual primary classroom leadership. I remember the dedication, her love of Garth and her positive way of accepting no nonsence in the classroom. May the God of Comfort be with the family in these times and the wonderful memories be knit into their hearts forever. Don Mandryk - Posted by: Don MANDRYK (Colleague) on: Sep 18, 2012

  • Karen was a wonderful educator at our school. She taught my son and I had requested she teach my daughter this year. Her spirit and passion was something that made each student feel special. I enjoyed her company and had many great laughs with her in the hallway at school. She will be missed. My prayers and thoughts are with her family at this difficult time. - Posted by: Chassity McIntyre (Parent Council President at Riverbend School.) on: Sep 17, 2012

  • To Alana & family - I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. I have been reminiscing about all of the play dates, crafts, projects, and birthday parties at your house. • We spent more time together as kids/young adults than, regretfully, in our later years. In my childhood, I enjoyed her many visits to my grandparents' farm. I spent a couple of summers in Winnipeg where she and Aunt Gerry would take me with them to summer camps (Girl Guides?). I looked up to Karen and always wanted a mole on my chin just like her! My deepest condolenses to Garth, Alana, Lea, Evan, Aunt Gerry, Bob/Ursula, Debbie/Glen and kids. - Posted by: Allison Chiponski (cousin) on: Sep 15, 2012

  • As a parent there are a few teachers that you hold in high regard over the years and Mrs. Hosegood was one of them. Both Mrs. Hosegood and her teaching partner worked diligently with our son in order to improve his reading. When we look back at the teachers he has had over the years she was definitely one of the best. We were very saddened to hear about her passing as she was an amazing teacher. - Posted by: Anonymous () on: Sep 15, 2012
