FRED J. WENGER July 23, 1930 - September 14, 2012 It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, Opa, brother and friend, on September 14, 2012. Fred passed away peacefully surrounded by his own family, as well as his extended Riverview family. He is predeceased by his parents, Friedrich and Johanna Wenger, and brother Wolfgang. He leaves behind to mourn his devoted wife of 51 years, Marianne; his daughters Christine (Geoffrey) Hayden and Susanne (Brian) Peter; his four beautiful granddaughters whom he adored and was so proud of: Elisabeth, Stephanie, Jennifer and Erika; his sister Ingrid (Fritz), and numerous relatives in Germany. Fred was born in Wolfen, Kreis Bitterfeld, Germany in 1930. He immigrated to Canada in 1953 and made a life for himself before bringing Marianne over seven years later. Fred was a perfectionist and prided himself in quality work. His beautiful crucifixes and wood carvings, as well as intarsia and bowl turning, are tangible reminders of the dedication he had to his craft. There was nothing he couldn't fix and if a tool wasn't available, he would make one himself. Over the past three years, Fred was challenged by the limitations imposed upon him by his accident however, he taught us so many lessons in strength, patience and gentleness. He defied every prediction his doctors made and fought valiantly until the very end. His stay at Riverview provided him with an entire new extended family, who adoringly called him Opa or Papa. His room became a gathering place for staff and residents, drawn to his warmth. Memorial service will be held Friday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m. at Riverview Health Centre, 1 Morley Ave., with private interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Riverview Health Centre Foundation - 2West, 1 Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 2P4. The family is eternally grateful to the remarkably caring staff of 2W, who endeared themselves to us all and will forever remain in our hearts. Herr gebe ihm die ewige Ruhe. • I will always have very fond memories of Fred and being included in numerous family gatherings over the years. Fred was always there with just the right tool I needed to borrow, and technical advice or a helping hand. One special memory was Fred bringing the film projector out to the back yard, and watching family movies on the wall of the house. Rest well. - Posted by: Bruce (neighbour ) on: Sep 19, 2012
