SAMUEL PURVES It is with great sorrow that we, the family of Samuel Purves, announce his passing on September 1, 2012 at the age of 92. He will be greatly missed by his son, Robert (Carol), daughters Linda and Judy. Our Dad is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife Phyllis in 1996, daughter Barbara Ann in 2000, grandson Andrew in 2006, his parents Samuel and Christian (Ridpath) Purves, two sisters Chrissy and Sadie, and brother Johnny. Sam was born November 3, 1919, on Mulvey Avenue in Winnipeg, the first in his family to be born in Canada (originating from Scotland), and lived his entire youth there, until meeting and marrying the love of his life, Phyllis Irene Robertson on September 2, 1942. Dad's nature was to contribute. He helped his family through those tough early years by working as a delivery boy on his trusty bicycle, while attending school. Eventually he was hired on as an apprentice mechanic at a local gas station and in 1941, he began his 34 year career with Trans Canada Airlines (TCA)/Air Canada. He progressed from learner mechanic to Maintenance Superintendant. When he retired in 1975, he turned his considerable talents to helping his family. His support was unconditional ever present. The family would like to thank the staff at Grace Hospital for their care and compassion for our dad, and we are sure that even they will miss his quick wit and quiet demeanor. At the request of our Dad, there will be no formal funeral and the cremation will take place at a later date. His last unselfish act was to donate his body to the University of Manitoba to further educate our young new Doctors of the future. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to contribute to the Anatomical Research Fund, or the charity of their choice. Our Dad supported the Canadian Cancer Society, the Kidney Foundation or AndrewDunn.org. Also consider signing your Donor Card today.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Bob, Carol, Linda and Judy, just found this: My memories of Phyllis and Sammy belong to my childhood days when our families entwined...most memorable are going to Winnipeg for the Santa Clause Parade, about 1953 and the occasion of Ray and Alexis's wedding...your family holds a special place in my memories and I thank you for being there...I look forward to renewed acquaintances at this stage of our lives. • I always had such a very close relationship with you, Dad, and you had such patience with me, sometimes I didn't necessarily deserve it ;) We know when that was! We enjoyed a common bond with our horses when I was young and then again when I got older. I am so grateful that I had the special opportunity to have you live on the property with us when we moved out to Cooks Creek and have so many of those wonderful memories that I will hold onto forever. I can bring them out whenever I feel sad and lonely, so I am truly blessed and thankful for those that. You gave me your shoulder to cry on, your advice, that I was constantly asking for and the amazing support that you offered me, will never be forgotten, Dad and I will always, always be appreciative, for without it, I don't know where I would be today. You got me through some pretty tough times. Thank you Dad. I miss you now and know that I will miss you forever, but I know that you are finally back with Mom now and that's where you should be. We had our time with you and she has missed you, I am sure, so be happy. Please tell Andrew that I love him and miss him everyday. Love you Dad, until we are all together again.....air hugs, Judy. - Posted by: Judy Dunn (Daughter) on: Sep 27, 2012
