MARIA THERESIA OBERBUCHNER (nee STETTER) After an 81 year journey, on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at St. Boniface Hospital, God called for Maria (Oma) to join him in heaven with her mother Kreszenz, father Jakob, sister Fannerl Bauer, brother-in-law Alois Bauer, and numerous aunts and uncles. Having bravely fought and never quit, Oma went home to our Father with her family united at her bedside, just like she taught us. Left to mourn are husband Fritz Oberbuchner, brother Alfons (Hilde) Stetter, son Gerald (Jacqueline) Oberbuchner, son Fred (Ann) Oberbuchner, grandsons Jakob and Simon Oberbuchner, and many nieces and nephews back in Bavaria. On December 27, 1930 a beautiful baby girl was born to Kreszenz and Jakob Stetter in Bavaria, Germany. At the time, her proud parents could never have imagined what the future would hold for this tiny baby, only that her name would be Maria Theresia Stetter and that she would grow up in the house Jakob built in Rohrbach, Bavaria. This little baby girl grew up to be a professional seamstress who made the most beautiful dresses. While living in Munich, Bavaria, Maria met and eventually married the love of her life, Friedrich Oberbuchner (known as Fritz). During their early years as a team, Maria worked diligently to help provide for the young couple so her husband could study and he became a structural engineer. The loving couple were then blessed with the birth of their first son - Gerald. Never one to rest on past achievements, in 1959, Maria announced to her parents, older sister Fannerl and younger brother Alfons that her young family was heading off on a ship to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to work hard and make their own opportunities. Thousands of kilometers away from Bavaria, Maria made a brand new, warm and loving home for her husband and one year old son. Seven years later, in 1966, the family was blessed with the birth of their second son, Friedrich. The years were not without hardship for this young lady, but she never gave up as quitting was not in her nature. Her sons grew up and learned the merits of discipline, commitment, and especially love, always with a loving home to provide a safe place for them. All the while Maria stayed true to her heritage through her countless hours sewing for the Edelweiss Schuhplattler, a Bavarian dance group she helped found. Both sons married and eventually Fred and Ann provided Maria (now proudly called Oma ) with two grandchildren - Jakob and Simon. With those, the sewing and knitting began once more by the proudest Oma you could ever imagine. In May of 2012, Maria and Fritz (Oma and Opa) celebrated their 60th anniversary at a great party with their family and many of their dearest friends. Oma, we are truly blessed to have had you as a Wife, Sister, Mother, Oma, and friend. We will never forget all that you taught us. We love you. All are invited to attend Oma's Funeral Mass to be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2012 at St. Bernadette Parish, 820 Cottonwood Rd. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating the gift of blood or making a donation to CancerCare Manitoba. Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

I am happy to have had the chance to share the stage and many a "prosit!" with Maria. Her devotion to her family, her heritage, and her home can be considered a fine example for us all to strive for. I hope that God has a fine glass of brandy waiting for her and I hope that heaven is clean and well organised or Maria will have something to say about it. Maria had a great big heart and a beautiful soul to match it. That soul is not gone, just gone away for now. - Posted by: Todd Burnell (Friend and fellow performer) on: Sep 27, 2012
