MILDRED JOHNSON September 15, 1920 October 11, 2012 Peacefully on October 11, 2012 Mildred Marie Elizabeth Johnson (nee Hasland) passed away at the age of 92. Mel was predeceased by her husband Evert, parents Marius and Eva; and brothers Wally and Robert. She is survived by her sisters Lillian (Torske) and Myrtle (Mager). In addition to many relatives and friends, she will be remembered fondly by her daughter Elaine (Ogilvie) Henrickson (Robert) and son Don (Jacqueline), grandchildren James Ogilvie (Virliza), Cameron (Megan), Leesa Ferreira (Marco), Michelle Johnson (Jason), and Kellsey Dawn Scheepers (Eric) and great-grandchildren Christopher Ogilvie, Linnae and Calvin Johnson, Mateo Ferreira, and Tayvn Scheepers. Mel was born in Inwood, MB on September 15, 1920. She was the third of five children. As a 16 year old, Mel worked as a nurse's aide in Teulon until leaving for Winnipeg at the age of 17. In a recent conversation, Mel suggested that she inherited her mother's genes as a lady who did not love farm life and she yearned to go to the city. Once in Winnipeg, she worked at Macy's and then later in life at Sears where she worked for 20 years. Just prior to the Second World War, Evert and Mel met at a dance in Chatfield and on July 16, 1943, they were married in Winnipeg. Not long after, Mel and Evert moved to Camp Borden in Barrie, ON before moving into their first home in Winnipeg on Ashburn Street. From there they moved to Edmonton to join the larger Johnson family that lived there. It was here that Mel and Evert started their family that included daughter Elaine and son Donald. After five years, the family moved back to Winnipeg settling on Poplarwood Avenue where she remained for over 50 years. The family home became a popular place for gathering and social events featuring Mel as part of a live band on guitar or the piano. In 2007, Mel left the residence she called home but was happy about moving to Dakota House because she was the first person to live in the brand new suite that became a place where she could continue to spend quality time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Those who knew Mel also knew that she had a great eye for fashion, hair, and makeup. Even at 92 years old she still prided herself on her appearance and still kept up with the latest fashion trends. She always looked forward to her weekly Friday appointments at the salon with Stephanie. As a young girl and throughout her life she had a love for animals, music, gardening, cards and scrabble. She found it hard to find competition in scrabble because nobody could spell . Right up until the end of her life, Mel had a sharp memory of events, names, and places that related to her family. The importance of family to Mel was obvious and her generosity knew no bounds as someone who had a way of connecting with people that made them feel safe, loved, and appreciated. Throughout her life she selflessly offered her heart and home as a supporter and care giver in many ways to family and friends. Her words of encouragement and sound advice and support will be missed by many. The family will host a reception and celebration of Mel's life on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I did not know this lovely lady but her husband did a great deal of re-decorating for my parents and her brother Wally Haslund was a good friend/customer of my father. Wally owned "Haslunds Garage" at St. Mary's Td and Lyndale Drive, it was actually an old Barn. Those were the days. I still live in the area. - Posted by: Claudia Beischer (brothers acquaintance) on: Oct 14, 2012

  • I will always remember Mel, at our many family gatherings, as a spirited, genuine character with a keen interest in all that went on around her. We shared many laughs, and it is with great sorrow that I say good bye to a wonderful person whose presence will be sorely missed at all future family events. - Posted by: Joy Beatty (Sister to daughter in law and friend) on: Oct 14, 2012
