NANCY JANE POWZUN (nee WIEBE) We are deeply saddened to announce the peaceful passing of Nancy, aged 63, of pancreatic cancer at Stonewall Hospital on October 27, 2012. Richard, her husband, best friend and soulmate of 44 years, said Nancy would often say to him "We love each other SOOOO much!" Also left to cherish her memory are sisters, Brenda (Norman) Zebrynski, Donna Wiebe, Norma (Mike) Kostrowski and sister-in-law, Helen (Barney) Barnsbrook. Nancy was a devoted and nurturing aunt to Sean (Serena), Tammy (Murray), Glenn (Terri), Carla- deceased (Sean), Michael (Kelly), Kyle (Danielle), Haley, Chelsi, and Hannah. Fourteen great-nieces and nephews brought Nancy great delight. She showered the 'kiddies' with the love and attention of a doting grandma. Ever since our mom died Nancy became the family matriach and she will be sorely missed by us all. Nancy was predeceased by her parents, Norman and Ann Wiebe of Byng Place, niece, Carla Zebrynski, father-in-law, John Powzun and Sophie, and Keisha, their treasured Samoyed. After completing school at Vincent Massey, Nancy was hired to work there as a school secretary. After 10 years, Nancy moved to the Administration Office and was the Executive Assistant to the Secretary Treasurer. We have been told that Nancy was the consummate professional and was highly regarded by the superintendents, colleagues, school trustees, and others with whom she interacted for her attention to detail and her kind and caring manner. After 44 years of dedicated service to the Fort Garry School Division, now part of the Pembina Trails School Division, Nancy retired in December 2011. She had hoped to spend a lengthy retirement enjoying the 'Paradise' she and Richard created on 100 acres of land just north of Warren. They loved farming the land, tending their trees and their bountiful vegetable and flower gardens, going for long walks out to the back 40, and birdwatching. They so enjoyed watching the antics of the many hummingbirds who visited their maple trees. Nancy loved to cook and bake and passed on her passion and expertise to her nieces and nephews. She even shared some of her recipes with Wayne, a favourite caterer she knew. Desserts at family gatherings always included Nancy's cheesecakes, elegant tortes or cookies and her Easter eggs. She and Richard loved hosting a few family gatherings each year. A winter skating party on their pond followed by roasting hot dogs over a fire and a hayride was especially memorable. Her other interests included sewing, creating pictures in stained glass, carpentry, furniture refinishing and going to auction sales. She became quite astute at reading the body language of other bidders so that she could win the bid. Thank you to the many caring and compassionate nurses and Health Care Aides at both Selkirk and Stonewall Hospitals. A special thank you is extended to Dirk, the paramedic. In lieu of flowers, donations to CancerCare Manitoba or The Humane Society would be appreciated. A Celebration of Nancy's Life is on Saturday, November 3 at 11:00 a.m. at the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, 433 Main Street in Stonewall.

  • One could not have had the pleasure of working with a more pleasant & compassionate person as Nancy. She truly was a very very dear and special individual whether in the school or out of it at one of its many functions. She truly was a beautiful soul. And now deserves and I am sure will receive her hundred acres of prime real estate in heaven. - Posted by: Arnie Gardner ( friend & colleague) on: Nov 04, 2012

  • I worked with Nancy at Vincent Massey and again at the Fort Garry School Division Offices on Henlow Bay. Nancy was a kind friend and a dedicated person to her work, friends and especially to her husband Richard. She always had a kind 'word' to say about you Richard, and she always worked hard, even doing her 'cleaning' at home in the middle of the night. I will always have fond memories of Nancy. - Posted by: Myrna Poetker Gierek (Fellow Worker) on: Nov 04, 2012

  • I met Nancy several years ago when Assiniboine South amalgamated with Fort Garry School Division. I never imagined all those years ago that Nancy would retire and I would be faced with the VERY daunting task of trying to fill her shoes! I am very fortunate that Nancy took me under her wing, patiently taking the time to mentor me, sharing with me all the knowledge and tips that she had acquired over her many years of service. This was so true to her character, she was such an invaluable, professional and dedicated team member! Even after retirement, Nancy would occasionally email me with little things she remembered that she thought might make the job easier for me. Often she would include her special recipes for ribs or brownies, or baked beans. I appreciated that she was thinking of me, and she loved hearing about everything that was happening in the Secretary-Treasurer’s department since her retirement. My sincere condolences to Richard and Nancy’s family. I know she will be dearly missed by all. - Posted by: Emily Vickers (Co-Worker) on: Nov 02, 2012

  • Nancy was our cousin, but unfortunately we separated either through distance or marriage thus making a closeness to Nancy impossible. I always respected the Wiebe family, and liked the girls so much. It wasn't until we moved back to Winnipeg from B.C. that I found out of Nancy's illness. I told my brother that we should go and spend some time with her ...so we did. Nancy was SO GLAD to see us and spend time with us from 730pm to 930pm. We talked about so many things and had alot of good laughs.....The last time I had seen Nancy was her wedding so there was alot of catching up to do with myself and my brother who was also in Nancy and Richards bridal party. We had such a nice time so much that Nancy turned away some visitors just to spend time with us....Thanks for that Nancy.....it was very nice of you to make us FEEL so important that you ONLY wanted to spend time with us... May you REST IN PEACE Nancy and pray for us down here on earth that one day we can ALL be re-united as one big happy family....and this time I promise not to wait so long to visit!! - Posted by: Chris and Allan Winchar (cousins) on: Nov 02, 2012

  • When I went to Vincent Massey she was a wonderful secretary. Always cheerful and helpful. I reunited with Nancy when Richard and Nancy built a pond on their acreage. What a surprise to know she just lived 5 miles from my home. From there I would see Nancy and Richard at many auction sales which she truly enjoyed always coming home with some treasure. I will truly miss Nancy and my thoughts are with you Richard. - Posted by: Marlys Schott (Friend) on: Nov 01, 2012

  • There will never be words for aunty nancy - what a special lady! she always put me in my place! One of the things she said to me at Thanksgiving- "you don't get offended when we tease you about things do you? because, you know we all love you just the way you are. I am sure you are good at something, we just don't know what it is yet!"-LOVE IT! I will always cherish our times together. You are now out of your pain, and I love you dearly-until we meet again aunty nanc! - Posted by: Kelly Muir (Niece) on: Nov 01, 2012

  • Nancy was the front line at Vincent Massey during my high school days and was always friendly, helpful and cheery. She must have had tons of patience or hid her frustrations with us (teenagers don't you know) cause I thought she took it all in stride (circa 1969-73). Nice to read the wonderful tribute for a super lady - life is too short. my sympathy to her family and friends - Posted by: Cathy Murray (student at VMC) on: Nov 01, 2012
