Mom's career has been nothing short of remarkable. Giving up high school in order to help her parents at the store in St. Eustache, this intelligent woman married at the age of 20, proceeded to give birth to eight children (the first twin boys died at birth). During this period she relocated to Winnipeg, St. Francis Xavier, St. Rose area, then to the west coast where she delivered her last child. She later returned to Winnipeg in the mid 50s as a single mother of six children. She started working full-time for IBA as a bookkeeper and self-taught accountant, managed to buy a house and help all six children acquire good educations. Later she was transferred to Ottawa to help establish a book keeping system for' SECREL , another institutional buying agency. She later returned to Winnipeg to spend her remaining 'working' years as an accountant and bookkeeper at the French Cultural Centre. After retirement she lived as an independent senior, enjoying her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren until moving to Foyer Valade. In spite of declining health this woman continued to put on a 'happy face', play cards while never forgetting to say her rosary. This strong-willed, independent and gentle woman always ended our visits with ..'thanks for coming'. Enjoy your eternal rest Mom. You so richly deserve it. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to caregivers at Foyer Valade for the comfort and devotion provided to Mom during the past six years!! In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Winnipeg Harvest or Siloam Mission. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I had the unique experience to board with the Hamelins in St. Boniface in the early 1960's. Mrs. Hamelin was a surrogate mother to me and I will always remember her and love her as a beautiful woman who cared for everyone. Under difficult circumstances she raised a family who exceeded all expectations. I attribute any and all successes I've enjoyed in life to the love and encouragement I received the from the Hamelin family. And, all daughters were exceptionally beautiful. - Posted by: Paul Fee (Friend ) on: Jan 07, 2023

  • My heart skipped a beat at the news. Not Tante Irene...as if her life on earth would go on forever! I loved Tante Irene...she had such zest, such energy, such vibrancy. We shared good times together in St. Eustache, St Boniface, Ottawa & Montreal. She holds a special place in my heart. Dear cousins know that I care and share in your loss. - Posted by: Phyllis La Fleche (niece) on: Jan 17, 2013

  • Denis, our sincere sympathy to you and your family on your recent loss. While we did not know your mother and grandmother, in reading her obituary, we realize that she must have been a very exceptional, strong, and remarkable woman who faced every challenge head on and won. She apparently was quite the lady and one to be very proud of. Once again, our deepest sympathy. - Posted by: Dave & Haldean () on: Dec 19, 2012
