CHARLES RENE MARTIN 1923 - 2013 Peacefully, on January 16, 2013 with his family by his side, Charles R. Martin died at the age of 89. Charles was predeceased by Yolande, his wife of 58 years, his brothers Andre, Paul, Jean and sister Germaine. Left to cherish his memory are his children Charlaine (Cameron), Norman (Audrey) and Reginald, his grandchildren Kyle, Colin, Scott, Jenny, Chris and his brother Peter as well as many nieces and nephews. Charles was born and raised in St. Claude, Manitoba, served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War from 1944 to 1946 then moved to Pine Falls after his marriage to Yolande in 1948 where he worked as a lab technician at the Abitibi Paper Mill for 39 years. They moved to Winnipeg in 2003. Dad was a kind and gentle man who will be remembered for his subtle humour and for being fair, honest and always willing to help those in need. He volunteered for the Knights of Columbus for 25 years, served in the Canadian Army Militia for 16 years and was involved with many community organizations in Pine Falls. He loved sports both as a fan and a participant. He played baseball in his earlier years, old timer's hockey later, and curled, skated and cycled for many years till finally putting away his bike and hanging up his skates at the age of 80, but continued to walk a mile a day until the age of 83. His favourite pastime, though, was being a fan of his children and grandchildren, whether it was driving to sports events around the province or to Winnipeg for weekly music lessons or taking his grand-children for two weeks every summer for swimming lessons. It was important for him to be at every one of our events and he always did it because he wanted to. Thank you, Dad, for being such a wonderful father, grandfather and friend. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). We sincerely thank the staff on 5A and of the ICU at the St. Boniface Hospital. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550
