MARGARET JOAN POLLARD (nee HOESCHEN) After a lengthy illness, Joan Pollard our most loved mother and grandmother, passed away suddenly on Friday, January 25, 2013. Joan was born on August 4, 1939, to parents John C. and Alma Hoeschen and leaves to cherish her memory her daughter and best friend Megan, daughter Karen, and her only grandchild Jack who she absolutely adored. She thought the sun rose and set on Jack and in many ways she lived for him during these last years. Joan will also be missed by her siblings Dr. Robert (Bob) Hoeschen (Clare), Dr. Laurence (Laurie) Hoeschen, and Diane Hoeschen, sister-in-law Diane (Bob) Fraser, as well as her many nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her husband Bob, her sister Helen, her brother Jack, and her nephew Richard. Joan was an incredibly intelligent woman, attending school at Holy Cross and St. Mary's Academy, and later earning two degrees from the University of Manitoba. After completing her education, Joan worked as an actuary in Montreal and then later in Winnipeg for Manitoba Medical Services. After she had her children, Joan continued to keep active in the financial industry by preparing income tax returns. Joan's razor-sharp mind made her an ace crossword puzzle solver, and she also enjoyed playing Bridge, and cheering on her favourite sports teams including the L.A. Lakers, San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers, and Montreal Canadiens. The cottage at West Hawk Lake was a much-loved retreat for Joan, and she looked forward to spending time there as a young girl with her parents and siblings, and then as a wife and mother with her own family. We will remember Joan for her love of family, her caring and warm nature, and her quick wit. Family and friends are welcome to attend a gathering to celebrate Joan's life at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home (Portage Avenue at the Perimeter) on Thursday, January 31 at 2:00 p.m. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, donations in Joan's memory may be made to the MS Society of Canada/Manitoba Division. Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • My husband Doug and I have fond memories of curling in the Continental Curling League with Joan and Bob. When Joan wasn't curling on our team anymore, we looked forward to going up to the lounge and enjoying a few drinks with the Pollards and others in the league. Joan definitely had a quick wit, and she and Bob were very warm and friendly people. I think fondly of that time and miss them very much. My condolences to Karen and Megan and the rest of the family. - Posted by: Kathy Nuytten (friend / former curling partner) on: Jan 31, 2013

  • I arrived home yesterday to learn of Joan's death. She was my sorority little sister and a very special person. Our husbands were in the same fraternity so there were always special contacts. Her gentle soul will be missed! - Posted by: Ruth Hallonquist (Friend, sorority sister) on: Jan 31, 2013

  • I always remember Mrs. Pollard at the Continental Curling League games. She always had time to chat with us 'young folks' and was generally interested in what was going on in our lives. I also loved how Joan and Bob were part of the Lovallo family at these events and were always full of big smiles and laughs for all! Special people bring special - Posted by: Dawn Turner (Friend) on: Jan 31, 2013

  • I have fond memories of Joan, Bob and family, particularly at West Hawk Lake where they were happy for many years. As Bob worked on the never-ending cottage, Joan's intelligence and kindness shone. I am glad she lived to enjoy her grandson. Sincere sympathy to the family, Susan - Posted by: Susan Riley () on: Jan 31, 2013

  • It is with sadness that I hear of the passing of my school day friend, Joan, and recall all the good times we had over our years of friendship during our elementary and high school years. We spent much time giggling over the silliest things but to us they were funny. Remember one time while we were at it in church, Mrs. Hoeschen prancing up from the back of the church and getting in between us. Needless to say,she was not impressed! We had loads of fun in those days and I considered Joan a true friend. Our lives took different paths but I thought of our times together many times over the years. I always felt welcome in the Hoeschen home and I'm sure Joan felt the same at the Foley's. My sympathy to the family at this time, and I'll keep you in my prayers, dear friend. Rest in peace. - Posted by: pat (foley) glover (school age friends) on: Jan 29, 2013

  • I am broken hearted to have lost a lifetime friend. We were not yet teenagers when we first met at WestHawk Lake through my friend Gail(Robson) Ireland. Joanie was the smart one who always kept us on the straight and narrow. Was always the driver of the "big olds" as we toured around trying to look like grown ups. Rest in peace my old friend. You have earned your place in heaven. Say Hi to Jack, always my favourite Air Canada passenger. Love Joan - Posted by: Joan Farnfield (friend) on: Jan 28, 2013
