MARY ISABEL JONES (JONESY) (nee SKINNER) Our hearts are saddened with the loss of our Mom, Isabel Mary Jones (Jonesy) (nee Skinner) on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at the age of 92 at St. Boniface Hospital after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband Lloyd Allan Walter (1998) and her son Robert James Allen (2012). Left to mourn her loss are her daughter, Beverly Ann Matte (George), her daughter-in-law Barbara Joan Jones (Rogers), four grandchildren, Casey (Shaelyn), Carlea (Kevin), Jonathan (Wanda) and Melanie, her two great-grandchildren Bryn and Griffin and many relatives and family from Ontario to British Columbia will remember her fondly as a fun, loving, giving individual. Isabel was born to George and Mary Jane Skinner in Roland District, MB near Carman on April 12, 1920 on the family farm and eventually moved to Carman with her family. After her father passed she came to Winnipeg and entered the St. Boniface School of Nursing graduating in 1944. She did private duty nursing until 1949. She remained in Winnipeg where she met her late husband Lloyd (Allan) in 1948 and married in September 1949. They raised their family in St. Vital and Isabel went back to work at St. Boniface Hospital in 1953 when she joined the staff of the new Post Surgery Dept. where she enjoyed 15 years before transferring to various departments until retiring in 1984. Jonesy always spoke fondly of Dr. Molgat and his service. Isabel had the honour of nursing the first open heart surgery patient at St. Boniface Hospital. She was honoured with a Farewell Roast in April 1984 where many of the hospital officials, doctors, and nursing colleagues acknowledged her outstanding contributions to the nursing field. Isabel loved nursing and was very involved with both the hospital and her patients. Jonesy was a people person, always had a good story, some very colourful jokes, and was always ready to lend a helping hand. She was a wonderful friend, neighbour, and loving mother. After retirement she enjoyed her nursing reunions every year, and looked forward to visits from family members living out of town. Isabel was also active in bowling and was president of the St. Boniface Hospital Bowling League for many years. She was active in the St. Vital Legion Auxiliary until its demise. Isabel was famous for her "homemade buns". She would rise early in the morning, get the buns on the go and take some to her #1 son, Bob and family, and any friends who were ill or needing some cheering up. She loved to cook and could put a meal together at a moment's notice or as she called it "rough and ready, bugger the style". The coffee pot was always on in Isabel's kitchen on Fernwood. In later years she enjoyed winters in Florida and Phoenix, travelling with friends and after the death of her husband, taking cruises with her "girls" Bev and Barb and her "boys" Bob and George. She also enjoyed bowling, bingo and crosswords, but especially enjoyed many, many summers out at Falcon Lake with the family and the biannual house boating trips on the Shuswap. A celebration of her life will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. on Monday at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow. Family and friends are welcome to attend and if they would like, to share any special memories they have of Jonesy. Refreshments will be served. Special thanks to the staff on 5E of St. Boniface Hospital for the care of our dear mother. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation or CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. • As the first open heart surgery patient at 5 year old, I have faint yet vivid memories of a nurse called Jonesy. I especially remember reuniting with her several year ago at one of her nurses reunion. • Isabel Jones was one of the finest ladies that I had the pleasure of having known. She was a great lady! We used to go to Bingo together and we always had fun. She always had a story and kind words for anyone she met. I am sorry to hear of her passing. She loved her children and her grandchildren meant the world to her. A real sad loss for all who loved and knew her. - Posted by: Shelley Harrower (Friend) on: Mar 25, 2013

  • Jonesy was my Head Nurse for 3 yrs. I loved her stories about when she was in training (I wasn't born yet). She defended her girls (nurses) to the fullest against doc's who might speak unkind to them. She loved us all, and she still has a big spot in my heart. Condolences to her family - Posted by: Henry Lucy (My Head Nurse) on: Mar 24, 2013
