Richard will be sadly missed by his loving companion Elda, his children, Shelley, Kevin and Jen (Bill), and grandchildren, Thaddeus, Meaghan and Sage. He also leaves his brothers Graham (Kathy) and Douglas, as well many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. Rick's life journey began August 29, 1943 in Winnipeg. Rick grew up in Fort Garry. At the age of 11 he lost his father Emil Goritz to cancer and shortly after lived with his mother Emily Rose who passed away in 1981. During his childhood, he spent many summers on the family farm with his grandparents. He enjoyed gardening and had many prize winning Gladiolus. When mature he worked for Forestry then became a Federal Meat Inspector working at many locations including Swifts, Burns and Granny's Poultry before retiring. Rick had many passions and pursued many interests. For over 25 years he bred, trained and showed Labrador Retrievers and was a founding member of the Sporting Dog Association of Manitoba. He enjoyed fishing, goose, duck and deer hunting trips with his buddies and would never miss the annual moose hunting trip with his best friend Lloyd. Rick also enjoyed coaching hockey for many years. After being diagnosed with MS, Rick quickly became a mentor and counsellor to newly diagnosed MS people and was noted with Achievement Awards for his work to make life easier for those dealing with MS. These included the Steppin out Group and Hunters with Disabilities. Rick was always seen at the MS Walk, MS Bike-a-thon and Cruising for MS events. His mission statement was "Enabling People affected by MS to enhance their quality of life". A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate in his memory to MS Society (Winnipeg Chapter), Canadian Diabetes Association, Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, Ducks Unlimited Canada or a charity of your choice. • Rick you brought quite the sense of humor to Appleton. Early mornings, when we saw you: [I'm going to "wake up my car"]....cute sentiment. Last night, I called your phone number to talk to your family, only to hear Rick's "bold, resonant voice. Elda, you were very, very special to him. Our deepest condolences to you and Rick's families. • Shelly, thanks for all the years you helped your dad with tickets for Rainbow Stage. It was always enjoyed. The last time I saw him was at a Stepping Out Group event and he was his "stubborn" self :-) .... strong and opinionated and ready to stand up for all those with MS. He also had such a soft spot, that you had to look deeper to find, yet when you found it, it was really almost magical. He was a "good" man. Know that he will be missed by many ... and feel their support at this time and going forward. Take care of yourself and your extended family. {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{Rick}}}}}}}}}}}}}} <<-- he is now being hugged by his mom and dad. I feel a sadness that add to those others and be held just for him. - Posted by: Gini Lauder (MSer) on: Apr 11, 2013

  • Dear Elda, I believe that people come into our lives for a reason. Rick wouldn't have had many happy moments without you or you without him. It was a time when you both needed each other. You are both very kind and giving people. My thoughts and prayers are with you and his family. An other ANGEL is born! Love you lots. Louise and family. - Posted by: Louise Liebrecht (friend of Elda) on: Apr 11, 2013
