DOUGLAS CARROLL HILL April 14, 1933 - April 23, 2013 Suddenly, after returning from his 80th birthday vacation trip to Mexico. Doug loved life, loved his family and loved people. Doug always said he had a good life and laughed and joked right up to his last minutes. Dad was proud of the cottage he with the help of his brother-in-law built at Rock Lake in 1960 and in more recent years the "Guest House" built by the "Good Enough Construction Company", his sons Kevin (Jan), Brett (Tracy), grandsons Derek and Jared and the overseer his wife Audrey. He had many good years of hunting, boating, water skiing, cribbage, bonfires, September Long Weekends, and of course his "2-coal briquette" barbequing. Doug and Audrey began dating in high school and married in July 1955. Through these years Doug played basketball, winning a Canadian Championship with WLI in 1953 and inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in April 1984. As his boys grew up he chaired many swim meets and served as Chairman for the first YMCA Canadian Championships here in Winnipeg. In 1974 he joined Windsor Masonic Lodge serving as Master of his Lodge in 1981 and 1991 as well as DDGM 13th District in 1995. He joined Khartum Shrine Temple in 1977 and a member of Khartum Komedians in 1978, serving as President in 1994. He chaired the International Shrine Clown Association convention here in Winnipeg in 1986. He was a member of St. John's Lodge #4. Doug and Audrey enjoyed travelling North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. He loved to meet people and enjoyed talking to everyone even if he didn't know the language. Doug retired from the CNR in 1988 after 38 years. He is also survived by his sister Terry Sveinson, his sisters-in-law Ruth Hill and Jackie Groat and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Doug's life will be held at St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Rd. on Monday, April 29, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Khartum Shrine Temple or a charity of your choice.
