Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBETTY POCHINKO (nee BRIER) Peacefully at St. Norbert Personal Care Home, on April 28, 2013, Betty passed away at the age of 85 years. She will be forever loved and missed by her three sons Calvin, Fred and David (Christine), sister Anne, grandchildren Danah Bellehumeur (Mike) and Conrad Pochinko, and great-grandchildren Hope and Cole Pochinko. She will also be missed by her surviving sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews and their spouses, and many friends. Also missing her will be her best friend Lorna Popp. Betty was predeceased by her husband Peter, her parents David and Catherine Brier, her brother Jim, and sisters Dolly and Ruby (Buddick). Betty was born August 9, 1927 in Winnipeg. In 1947, Betty married Peter Pochinko and together they owned and operated Parkdale Service Station in St. Andrews. Living beside the garage, they would open their doors throughout the night to strangers in need of gas, a tow or help. In the 1960s, Betty obtained her Realtors license while still helping with the service station, and sold houses to many new buyers. Betty was a community activist and was instrumental in bringing gas and local telephone service to the St. Andrews area. Betty had a wonderful sense of humour and was known as Plum to everyone that knew her. She loved to prepare large family dinners, bake pastries, restore furniture, sew and knit clothing and blankets for her and her family. Betty and Peter loved to entertain friends and family and hosted many parties which usually involved dancing and playing instruments. In 1972, they moved to Cartwright, Manitoba to retire. There, Peter maintained the grounds at the local hospital and Betty converted their large front porch into a craft shop called Plum's Gifts and Crafts, which included many items she and Peter made themselves. They also enjoyed traveling and her favourite story to tell people was that while staying at Rideau Hall visiting their friends Governor General Ed and Lily Schreyer, she sat on the Queen's "Throne" in the Royal Suite. After Peter passed away in 1985, Betty remained in Cartwright until 1997 and then moved back to Winnipeg to live with her sons Fred and Calvin. Due to her declining health, Betty eventually moved into a personal care home in 2007. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at St. Norbert Personal Care Home for taking care of her during this time. Betty's funeral will be held on Friday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg. A burial service will be held in Cartwright, Manitoba on May 4 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cartwright Cemetery. I was so sad to hear of Betty's passing. As a teen growing up in Cartwright, Betty was such a warm and wonderful person. She would always open her home to Calvin's friends and I know we weren't always the best company to have around! She would sit and talk with us and always seemed so interested in what we were doing. I truly never met anyone quite like Betty! - Posted by: Carolyn Kinley (Cartwright resident and school friend of Calvin's ) on: May 12, 2013

We all loved Auntie Betty. Some of my favourite memories include going to visit Auntie and Uncle and tasting all her treats she would make for us, especially her sticky buns, yummmm. Whether it was trips to Parkdale or to Cartwright Auntie always made us kids feel special and welcome. She will always be in our hearts. - Posted by: Carol and John Reimer (neice and nephew) on: May 01, 2013

I love Auntie Betty. She has always been my favorite Auntie and I had so much fun with her and my Mom. I know that Auntie Betty, Mom, Uncle Pete and my Dad are all together in heaven watching over us. - Posted by: Ellie Buddick (Niece) on: May 01, 2013

She was a wonderful Auntie, and most people said I looked more like her than I did my own parents. She knew my husband from when he was little and always called him Mickey. She will be missed. love Cheryl - Posted by: Cheryl and Brian Kuly (Niece) on: May 01, 2013
