EDWARD GEORGE APPLIN November 12, 1939 - August 13, 2013 With heavy hearts we are sad to announce that on Tuesday August 13, 2013, with his children by his side, Dad joined his beloved wife and our dear mother Lorraine to continue their journey together. Left to cherish Dad`s memory are his children Colleen (Bob), Bruce (Cindy), Jo-Anne (Randy), Karen (Mitch) and his adored grandchildren Danny, Jamie, Abby and Brody. Dad will also be missed by his sister Evelyn along with in-laws Pat (Eileen) and Arlene (Roger), along with many nieces, nephews and a lot of great friends. Dad was predeceased by his wife Lorraine, his parents Gladys (Bill Elford) and Paul Applin, mother in-law Aquin and father in-law Leslie Walters as well as brother in-law Trevor Foster. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Dad spent many of his years on earth donating his time and efforts to ensure that many children were able to enjoy amateur sports in the St. Boniface and St. Vital areas. The rewards of these efforts were not only the joy he saw on the children's faces, but also all the friendships he made working with so many wonderful people associated with the St. Vital Mustangs football club as well as other community organizations. Lifelong friends, Bob Vandale, Al Penny, Gerry Durreault, Gord Holloway and Gord Cooke spent a wonderful day together with Dad just before his passing. How happy he was to spend time with all his best buddies and what a memory made, to be cherished forever. From all his children, sons and daughter in laws, and his cherished grandchildren...how lucky are we, because Dad spoiled us rotten our whole lives. From trips to Disneyland and Disney World, to the best Christmases ever...every Christmas Eve we waited for Dad to come home with his big wrapped presents and put them under the already over flowing with presents, Christmas Tree, bursting with excitement we would all try to see which one had our name on it. Oh the memories we all have. To Dad, it was always about his kids, how forever grateful we all are! The most important life lesson that Dad taught his Family and many others was the simple fact that helping others succeed, gives more meaning to your life! What a lesson to learn!! Love you Dad!!! A celebration of Dad's life will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere. Rev. Father Fred Olds presiding, with interment to follow. Many thanks are extended to the staff of the Victoria General Hospital for their care and compassion shown Dad during the challenging times and a special thanks to Dad's neighbour and dear friend Irene for her friendship and support over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancer Care. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

  • I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Uncle Ed! Some of my best childhood memories are of spending time at your house! Christmas was especially special. I always will remember how the presents under the tree spilled across the living room! The Christmas eve parties were always filled with fun and laughter and I always remember Christmas day with Uncle Ed cooking in the kitchen. He always made us laugh and was always so good to us! I wish I could be there to celebrate such a great man, my thoughts will be with you! What a lucky girl I am to have such a great uncle and such a great childhood with a great family! • Eddy and I have been friends for over 60 years. Often competitors but always willing to prolong the friendship! His "my way or the highway" attitude made things easy if you were in agreement, not so much otherwise. Always in the background was his willingness to outwork everyone in support of the kids. We'll have a bacon sandwich in memory -twelve slices please. Go with our love to be with Lorraine. - Posted by: Gerry Dureault (buddy/teammate/confederate) on: Aug 17, 2013

  • I was on the St. Vital Mustang team of 1955 with Ed. We won the championship despite out of date or no proper equipment, (we even had old leather helmets), But it was the friendship and sheer enjoyment of the game that made it so good. I remember Ed as a quiet guy with a cat that ate the canary grin. I never did find out what,if anything, he knew that the rest of us didn't. Fond memories of Ed from long ago but it says a lot about him that I remember him even though I haven't seen him for decades. I'm so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Murray Parker (old Mustang) on: Aug 17, 2013
