DOREEN MARGARET PURVES (nee TYNAN) August 30, 1928 August 16, 2013 Doreen passed away peacefully on Friday, August 16, 2013 at the Riverview Health Centre. She will be sadly missed by family and scores of friends that referred to her as Auntie Dodie. Dodie was predeceased by husband Bob, brother Bill Tynan and sister-in-law Mary Tynan. She is survived by her children John, Peter, Maggy and Helen (Rick) and grand-children Michael and Keely. Doreen grew up in Calgary with her father John Tynan and her brother Bill. Her connection to her brother was one that is very rarely seen. During her years in Calgary she loved to spend time hiking and skiing in the mountains with many friends who are now mountain legends. She loved the outdoors and spending time with her horses and seasonally working at Mt. Assiniboine with Lizzy Rummel. Dodie worked at Tynan Furniture until she met Bob, who whisked her off her feet. They married in Calgary in November 1957 and then moved to Winnipeg. She loved summers at the cottage in Lac du Bonnet, but also looked forward to winter ski trips back to her stomping grounds at Sunshine Village, where she originally met Bob, and the reunion with her brother Bill and the entire Tynan clan. Dodie volunteered countless hours at St. Amant where her daughter lives. She witnessed and supported the transformation of St. Amant from its inception to the world class facility it has become today. Her bond with Sister Desrosiers endured to the end. Bob and Dodie enjoyed travelling the world and experiencing the cultures and scenery of many countries. Bob was an accomplished private pilot and this took them on many trips around North America and solidified many long lasting friendships in the process. She would spend countless hours reminiscing with Clara Powell about camping trips the two couples took in their float planes. Special thanks and appreciation from the family go out to the staff at Riverview Health Centre, and long-time friend Julia Baluk who helped her greatly later in life. A Celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 22 at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, Winnipeg, MB. R3T 5Y4. A private interment will have taken place. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you consider a donation to the St. Amant Foundation: 440 River Road, Winnipeg, MB R2M 3Z9. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I was so saddened to hear of the passing of such a kind, generous, amazing woman. Dodie was absolutely wonderful to my Father Allan and sister Wendy during my sister's illness and passing and subsequently with Dad until he moved out West. I will always remember the things she did for me over the years and she will forever hold a special place in my heart. - Posted by: Heather McFarland (Cousin) on: Aug 23, 2013

  • Helen, John and Peter, We only learned of Dodie's passing today and Valerie and I send you our deepest sympathy for the loss of your mother. She was a favourite family member and, in particlular, I will always remember what a great help Dodie was to me on my trips back to Winnipeg in 1997 to visit my Dad and my sister Wendy in her last few months of life. Dodie was a wonderful lady. - Scott - Posted by: Scott A. McPherson (Cousin) on: Aug 23, 2013

  • I met Maggy's mom in 1983 when the new cottages at St. Amant were opened. I was Maggy's Occupational Therapist. The parents were very involved in the fundraising and building of these cottages where Maggy lived. Mrs. Purves always impressed me with her connection with Maggy and her diplomatic way of dealing with any of her concerns. A very classy lady who I will always remember and admire. - Posted by: Marlys Nagy (Maggy's previous Occupational Therapist) on: Aug 21, 2013
