HEATHER HORTON (BELL)
Date of Passing: Aug 30, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHEATHER HORTON (nee BELL) It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our mother Heather Ann Horton, peacefully at home, on August 30, 2013, at 71 years old. Heather will be lovingly remembered by her children, Brent (Michelle), and Brenda (Allan) MacLean, grandsons Sydney and Maximillian, sister Sheila Paton and niece Miranda Paton, both of British Columbia. Also mourning her loss are many close friends who Mum loved and cherished. Heather worked as an Executive Secretary for RBC for 25 years before retiring in 1999. She was very fond of her work and those she worked with. Although she was dedicated to her career she was definitely a woman who worked to live. She had a wonderfully full life and was active in sports, travel, and the community. Keeping fit, healthy, and active was important to Mum. She was an avid curler her entire life and also golfed, lawn bowled, and participated in yoga for many years. She made many friendships as a member of the Fort Rouge Curling Club, enjoyed annual bonspiel trips to Shilo and Grafton, and participated in the MLCA for 20 years. When there was no ice in sight she turned to golf and lawn bowling. Golfing with girlfriends was a favourite pastime and she looked forward to tournaments state-side. She was also a passionate sports spectator, especially her grandson's events. For 42 years, Mum lived in her cozy "cottage" in St. Vital. She was a well-loved neighbour who will be missed. Although she loved her home, Mum was a keen traveller. Some of her travelling highlights include numerous trips to Mexico, bi-annual trips to BC to visit friends and family, backpacking through Europe with her son, a Mum-and-Daughter trip to Italy, and most recently a trip to Disney World with grandkids. Heather was an active volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation, as well as in amateur sports and politics. The family wishes to thank Drs. Wong and Vergis, Nurse Alana and the team at CancerCare St. Boniface, the medical team at 6E St. Boniface Hospital, and Nurse Shannon and the Palliative Care team. We would particularly like to thank Mum's bestest' friend Barb Lloyd for being there, day or night, for the past 50 years. Heather's kind heart, warm smile, and sparkling eyes will be missed by all who knew her. A celebration of life will be held at the Unitarian Church, 603 Wellington Crescent, Wednesday, September 11 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

My husband and I were next door neighbours of Heathers for 12 years. We looked after each others homes when we travelled. Jim and I always enjoyed spending time with Heather who was so upbeat and pleasant. I was very sorry to hear of her passing, too young, too soon. - Posted by: Elizabeth Larmond Elliot (former neighbour) on: Sep 16, 2013

It was a true honor to get to meet and have conversations with Heather at Sanoviv. Her eyes sparkled, and she was so full of life! She was an inspiration to us all, and encouraged everyone whom she came in contact with. She visited my dad's room a couple of times to speak with him, and encourage him. She rarely spoke of herself. She always wanted to know how the other person was doing. What a hero! I will truly miss her. Sincerely, Cherie Surface - Posted by: Cherie Surface (Friend ) on: Sep 08, 2013

I have had the pleasure of knowing Heather for a number of years now. We have curled, golfed, camped together and through all this time we had a ball. Never a dull moment when Lady H was around. She was a kind, passionate, generous woman and that infectious smile and laugh she had I will never forget. Heather will be remembered by our whole family as the fun loving neighbour who always had time for a friendly hello. Whether she was in her front yard raking her lawn or greeting her family and Brenda's dog Murphy in the driveway she always had a smile and a wave for us. She will be missed. Our condolences to her close family and friends. We can only imagine the loss and sadness you must feel. - Posted by: Renee Sanguin and Scott Stirton (Neighbours) on: Sep 07, 2013

Heather and I became neighbours and good friends 42 years ago and our kids went back and forth from one house to another. She loved her home dearly and it suited her so well that I know I'll picture her curled up beside the fireplace, listening to music and raising a glass of good wine to welcome in another new year. It is hard to believe that she is gone but we will hold these wonderful memories in our hearts as we raise our glasses and toast her life. Cheers! - Posted by: Norma Drosdowech (Neighbour and Friend) on: Sep 06, 2013

Here I am on a golfing trip in the states and the only thing missing is Lady H (as some of us called her) We were here together in feb curling so being here without her is hard. Needless to say more than half the people on this golf trip knew Heather and will miss her. I for one am honoured to have known her and will miss our ""chats "" over a coffee. Rest in Peace my friend and we will catch up on things one day. - Posted by: Donna (Friend) on: Sep 05, 2013

I first met Heather when I was studying at Lakehead with my good friend Brent Horton; from the start, Heather always treated me as part of the family. Brent and I worked in the same community after graduation and I always looked forward to her visits. The Horton household was a lively place with Heather's stories of her many adventures. I will remember her as a fun loving yet compassionate person who always brought a smile to everyone's face. - Posted by: Kai Sonnenburg (Family Friend) on: Sep 05, 2013

Like so many people we know casually, we lose touch. The tribute that I was made aware of, enabled me to catch up in a superficial way. - Posted by: vic swiatkiewicz (school contemporary at Cecil Rhodes) on: Sep 05, 2013

Extending heartfelt sympathy to the Horton family on their mother's passing. Heather was a dedicated volunteer in the fight against cancer. Heather began as a volunteer canvasser for the Cancer Society in 2007. I appreciate her support and fundraising efforts during the annual community canvass. Please know our thoughts are with you at this sad time. Friends at the Canadian Cancer Society - Posted by: Lynda Ruban (staff at the Canadian Cancer Society) on: Sep 05, 2013

I knew Heather thru the many years of curling trips to Mahnomen (Shooting Star) and her visits to Foxwarren, with our friend Desneige. Very saddened by her passing. She always had a smile and a greeting for anyone, no matter who they were. A loving person all around and I will never forget the fun and laughs we shared thru the years. Sincere sympathy to you all. - Posted by: Lexie Butler () on: Sep 05, 2013

Violet and I are deeply saddened to hear of Heather's passing. We saw Heather last year at Victoria Beach and spent a wonderful day together. I'm very happy that we had a chance to do that. I got to know Heather better in the last year of my mum's life. She always went out of her way to see my mum and bring her treats and attend the family Chinese dinners we had. Funny but I was thinking about her at the beach this year but never called. I wish I'd had. I'll miss her. - Posted by: Bill and Violet Brown (Third cousin) on: Sep 05, 2013

I am very shocked and saddened to hear of Heather's passing! I did not realize that she was ill. The Business Women just celebrated our 30th year of operation in 2012 and Heather was one of the last of our curlers who was an original member. The first year I started curling in the league, the team I was on was on the executive and that season Heather was the President of the club and I remember having our meeting in her beautiful "cottage". Heather was a constant presence at the Rouge curling with Brenda and Maggie and she will be missed! I am very sorry for your loss and know that we will mention Heather's passing to our league members. Best wishes.
