PAT TURENNE (nee PELLAND) Born in 1943 in Regina, SK, Pat passed away unexpectedly at home October 7, 2013 at the age of 69. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 48 years, Roger Turenne, their daughters Christine (David) and Nathalie and grandchildren Léa, Xavier and Zachary. She is also survived by her siblings Denis (Kathleen), Annette (Marcel) Nadon, Richard (Sandy), Margot McLeod, Gail (Dale) Kantor and Guy (Denise), as well as sisters-in-law Paulette and Yvonne. Pat's life was one of love and devotion to community and family. After graduation from St. Boniface College, she taught for a few years at St. Joseph's Academy. While at College, she started a conversation with Roger which was to go on uninterrupted for 51 years. When he joined the foreign service upon graduation, she followed him on postings in Ottawa, Paris, Kinshasa, and Stockholm. Even though she hated official entertaining, she was very good at it. She was also very good in learning new languages including Spanish, German, Lingala and Swedish. When the couple returned to Manitoba in 1981, she briefly went back to teaching (French ASL) before launching her own freelance translation business which she maintained to her dying day. But with a twist. She would turn down translating contracts, even well-paid ones, if the subject matter was boring. She developed a passionate interest in genealogy and, volunteering two full days a week for decades at the St. Boniface Historical Society, she came to know more about the family connections and ancestry of Manitoba Francophones than any person alive. She served as treasurer of the Society for many years. An interest in heritage preservation also led to a nine-year stint on the Manitoba Heritage Council. She had a passion for orchids, served on the board of the Manitoba Orchid Society and now Roger has to figure out what to do with all those orchid plants scattered about the house. Along the way she gave the world two remarkable daughters, nurtured them through all the vicissitudes of life, and took great pride in seeing them make their own mark upon the world. She found no greater joy than being with her grandchildren and was mercifully spared the knowledge that she would not see them grow into adulthood. She leaves a hole in her community and in our hearts which is too big to fill. A memorial service to celebrate her life will take place Saturday, October 12 at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodière Blvd. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. Condolences & Memories (21 entries)

  • We have fond memories of Pat. As newcomers to Ottawa and External Affairs, we often consulted each other on protocol and what was expected of young green beginners to our new life adventure in 1967. Pat was a great knitter and our daughter Monica still has the little sweater set that Pat had knit for her in 1968. I (Grace) remember The Spanish lessons we took together in Ottawa and how Pat sometimes had to poke me awake when my pregnant body dozed off. It is a shame that we lost contact with each other, but with our 4 postings abroad, growing family and other responsibilities, it unfortunately happened. I'm glad that I (Grace) did get together with Pat in St Boniface in the 80s. We just learned of Pat's passing in the Manitoban. We send our sincere condolences to Roger, girls and families. Pat was a lovely lady and great fun to know. We'll always remember her infectious laugh. Sincerely, Grace and Chris Ahrens. - Posted by: Grace and Chris Ahrens (Chris Ahrens was Roger's colleague in External Affairs and a former classmate at the University of M) on: May 12, 2014

  • What a wonderful - and fitting - tribute! I have very fond memories of Pat from my ATIM days in the 1990s. A very sad loss. - Posted by: Jennifer Strachan (former colleague) on: Nov 15, 2013

• Pat had the warmest smile in the whole world and I remember that very vividly from high school days. I have no doubt there will be a big gap in the lives of many without her. Condolences to her family. You are in my thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Marie R. Morgan (Gay) (High School classmate) on: Nov 02, 2013

  • Pat, Your absence is already felt in so many ways. It will just not be the same here without you. You were such a constant and such a wealth of information; your passing leaves me with a sense of terrible loss. I come in on Tuesday morning and still expect to see you here. I will miss having a chat or a whine or a chuckle with you in the mornings before buckling down to work. Many prayers and condolences to all your family and friends. - Posted by: Janet (Co-Worker and Friend) on: Oct 16, 2013

- Posted by: Gilberte Proteau () on: Oct 12, 2013

  • Sympathies a toute la famille. She will be greatly missed by many. - Posted by: Tony Bonomo (Ami (Fils d'Annette)) on: Oct 11, 2013

Quel choc! Comme l'existence est fragile et courte! Pat l'a compris. - Posted by: Rolly de St Pierre Jolys (Friend) on: Oct 11, 2013

  • Feel blessed to have re-connected in recent years. Loved and appreciated Pat's sense of humour, her extensive and varied knowledge and her willingness to share it. So grateful for our recent lunch, little did we know it would be our last. Her passing leaves a hole impossible to fill. Rene joins me in offering Roger and family our sincere condolences as well as prayers. Patricia Bazinet - Posted by: Patricia Bazinet (High school friend) on: Oct 11, 2013

- Posted by: Lise et Réal Sabourin (amis) on: Oct 10, 2013

  • Although we never met in person, we felt like we knew each other through emails & genealogy. I found Pat when I was casually researching my grandfather's family & she quickly got me "hooked on" genealogy! - Posted by: Terri (Turenne) Fisher (distant cousin of Roger's) on: Oct 10, 2013

- Posted by: Janine Tougas, Raymond Poirier (collègues de travail ) on: Oct 10, 2013

  • Since high school, we grew up together - even being bridesmaids for each other - and she always teased me about my being older than her. One of her birthday cards to me said, on the front page, "They say "the good die young"! - and inside, "... which tells us a little something about ourselves!" and after the printed "Happy Birthday", she added "Old thing! From a not quite so old thing (HA! HA!" (signed Pat) That's one thing about Pat - she was always smiling or laughing. I miss her so much already! Glad we stayed in touch over the years, even though Pat & Roger lived far away from Winnipeg/St. Boniface for a while; so very glad that we had that last lunch together a few weeks ago - not knowing it would be our last. Not sure how the family will manage without her but my heart goes out to them. My sincere condolences and big hugs to all.
