WILBERT WILLIAM SMITZNIUK June 30, 1944 - November 15, 2013 It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Wilbert "Wil" Smitzniuk. Left to cherish his memory is his wife Terry; his son Andrew and daughter-in-law Cathy, and his precious little Shih Tzu, Mitzie. He is also survived by his mother Julia Smitzniuk. He was the eldest of his six surviving siblings, Merlyne (John), Laurie (Kathy), Sharon (David), Bernice, Dale and Melvin (Linda), as well as many nieces and nephews. Wil was predeceased by his father William "Bill" Smitzniuk in 2003. Wil missed and respected his dad so much - there was rarely a day when he didn't mention his name or have a story to tell about him. Wil was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta. His parents later moved to Wynyard, Saskatchewan where he spent his school years. He ventured to Winnipeg in 1965 where he met Terry, his wife of 47 years. Wil's careers included various jobs in his early years and ended with 24 years at the Winnipeg Free Press. He loved to travel - taking many trips to various hot spot destinations during his working years and in retirement as a snow bird spending six winters in Texas. Being an avid sports fan he loved to golf - he loved dancing, playing cards and was an excellent cook. He also very much enjoyed his trips to the Casino. Wil was an energetic "Take Charge Guy" and always seemed to know the right thing to do. He had many long time and close friends and his passing will leave a hole in the hearts and memories of all that had the privilege to know him. An "Afternoon To Remember Wilbert" will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 27, 2013, Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. A private family interment will be held at a later date at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends and family can honour his memory by signing the back of their donor card to give life to others like Wil did; donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, or the charity of one's choice. A special thank you to the doctors and care givers at the St. Boniface ICU, who attended to Wil during his final hours. • I am so sorry to hear of Wilbert's passing. I grew up 1/4 mile down the road from the Smitzniuk family and shared many happy memories with all of them. A big family in a small home, and always welcomed a few more to share a meal with. Wilbert was so happy when his Mom and Dad moved to Winnipeg so he could "look after them now". Always a gentleman with a great smile and laugh. - Posted by: Pat Melsted-Chabot (Friend) on: Nov 26, 2013
