DENIS JULIEN GELINAS 1947 - 2013 It is with profound sadness that our family wishes to announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Denis Gelinas, on Monday, December 2, 2013, at his home. He leaves his daughter, Denielle Gelinas-Sullivan (Ken) and his son, Dean Gelinas (Jennifer), his grandson Jaryd Sullivan, and the mother of his two children, Marilyn Gelinas. Denis is also survived by his sister, Monique Bergman (nieces Lisa and Carly and their families) of Vancouver, British Columbia. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerard and Madeleine Gelinas, on January 6, 1967, and April 13, 1994, respectively, and his wife, Rosemary Gelinas, on January 5, 2004. Denis was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on March 6, 1947, at St. Boniface General Hospital. He attended Ecole Précieux-Sang and Le Collège Otterburne. When employed as the Superintendent of the high-rise apartment complex known as Number One Evergreen Place, Denis also started working as a distribution carrier for the Winnipeg Free Press and remained there until 2010. Denis became the Property Manager at Ashdown Warehouse on December 23, 1990, until his passing. He was a conscientious person, putting in a full day at the Ashdown Warehouse after finishing his night shift at the Winnipeg Free Press. Denis was regarded as a good friend also by the Ashdown Warehouse condominium owners and tenants and many other people. He was held in high esteem for his big heart and uplifting spirit, contagious smile, warm and outgoing personality, and his friendly and cheerful nature. Some of his best characteristics were his great laugh and sparkling brown eyes. No matter what he was doing, Denis was never too busy to stop and chat. He was known for his love of animals, especially dogs. When Denis faced adversity in his lifetime, he rose above it. Denis treasured his many friends, including his group of buddies that he met for breakfast most mornings. He enjoyed good food, the return of the Winnipeg Jets, his Chicago Blackhawks, attending both Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Winnipeg Goldeyes games, and the movies. He was noted as being an avid "car guy." The Gelinas family wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg (UFFW) and, in particular, firefighter paramedic Mark Cortens and Captain Mike Wilcox for helping to save Denis' life in January 2013. Denis became a participant in UFFW's six-month campaign under the banner: "Winnipeg Fire Fighters, Your Primary Paramedic Response" to share his story and acknowledge his gratitude. We also wish to convey our appreciation to Dr. M.N. Vo of St. Boniface General Hospital, Cardiac Sciences, who went far beyond the call of duty in his caring for our Denis. A Mass and Celebration of Denis' Life will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at 1:00 p.m., at the Holy Cross Roman Catholic Parish, 252 Dubuc Street, Winnipeg MB R2H 1E3, with Celebrant, Father Martin Bradbury. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Denis' memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Suite 200, Winnipeg MB R3L OK6, (204) 949-2000; Manitoba Mutts Dog Rescue, 1-160 Dalhousie Drive, Winnipeg MB R3T 2Z1, (www.manitobamutts.org); or Before the Bridge Senior K9 Rescue Inc. (www.beforethebridge.ca), Box 11, Stony Mountain MB ROC 3A0, (204) 295-0955 or (204) 344-6054. An opportunity to share your thoughts in commemoration of Denis at the Celebration of Life will be made possible by request to his family. Cremation has now taken place. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Gratitude for what is provides the strongest platform for expanding into what could be. Life is a succession of moments. To have lived each one is to have succeeded. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

Condolences & Memories (15 entries)

  • We were so saddened to hear of Denis' passing. We had moved out of the Ashdown for some time, however Denis always kept us in mind. He always had a warm heart, and took care of us while we lived at the Ashdown. I'm so glad you got to meet our little one. Our condolences go out to his family whom he always spoke fondly of. - Posted by: Lynn, Ryan & Addison (Friends and neighbours) on: Jan 10, 2014

  • We lived in the Ashdown for four years and Denis was always kind and helpful, always there with a smile or a story. He welcomed our daughter when she joined us at the Ashdown, meeting us outside on our morning walks to see "his new little girlfriend". As an at-home mom with a new little one, Denis always reminded us that he would be there if we needed anything. We were tickled to see Denis on the WFPS commercials, and were saddened to read of his passing. He was a wonderful man and we are glad that he was a part of our life. - Posted by: Carly and Chris (Ashdown Tenants) on: Dec 30, 2013

  • To the family of Denis. I met Denis through Rosemary who I worked with for many years. He was always smiling and friendly as well as kind. He was very good to our son who has a disability and we will always remember Denis for that. So sorry to hear of your loss, our prayers are with you and all the family - Posted by: Marlene and Walter Swickis (Friends) on: Dec 17, 2013

  • Dennis was one of my favourite customers. He had a passion for cars that was refreshing to me. As we grew to become friends over the years, I came to appreciate his character, his wonderful sense of humour, and the sparkle in his eye when he spoke of Rosemary. We've lost another good one... Our Deepest Condolences to Dennis' family and friends on his passing. The Kozminski Family - Posted by: Matt Kozminski (Friend ) on: Dec 17, 2013

  • I was saddened by the news of Denis' passing. I had the pleasure and privilege of knowing Denis from 2006 until June, 2012 when I retired from my job. Our office, the CLRAM was located in the Bank of Canada Building which was connected to the Richardson Concourse. I would head to the office between 7 and 7:30 a.m. and would stop at Robins Donuts and have a visit with Denis and his coffee buddies. I always enjoyed and looked forward to that time together. Denis always had a smile on his face, laughter in his heart and, yes, a twinkle in his eye as well. My deepest condolences to your family. - Posted by: Lorraine Clapham (Friend) on: Dec 13, 2013

  • We have been residents of the Ashdown Building for 6+ years. Denis has always been extremely good to us, our two beagles and he welcomed our daughter Lila into the building when she was born earlier this year. He was always ready to joke around, was easy to smile and always stopped for a chat, no matter what he was doing. We are so saddened at his passing and wish to express our condolences to his family whom he liked to talk about. We miss him so much. Thank you for everything Denis, you won't be forgotten. - Posted by: Jerilynn, Gene and Lila (Friends and neighbors) on: Dec 09, 2013

  • As residents of the Ashdown Warehouse for eight years, we regarded Denis as a good friend - always cheerful and helpful and never too busy for a friendly chat. Our pug Miko considered Denis one of his best friends. He could recognize Denis's voice, even at the far end of a hallway, and always wanted to run to see him. We will all miss Denis. - Posted by: Russ, Glenn and Miko (Friends and neighbours) on: Dec 07, 2013
