Condolences & Memories (31 entries)

  • My Grade 9 Math Teacher, great guy always felt like he had my back. I used to take the 71 Arlington St @ William Ave to school. In matter of fact when 9-11 occured Mr. Randy Reid picked me up at the bus stop to school and we both listened on the radio about the twin towers and the planes that crashed in them. That was the type of guy Randy is, a wholesome guy. Thank you for treating me fairly and rest easy. We miss you dearly! - Posted by: Johnathan Mohammed (Grade 9 Math Teacher) on: Apr 24, 2020

  • Randy and I shared a classroom during my first semester of teaching ever. He made me feel so welcome and always made room for me. We shared many great conversations about teaching and life and he was really a role model. I saw his compassion and kindness towards all his students and fellow teachers first hand. I am so saddened to hear of his passing. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Mindy Lichtman (Colleague) on: Jan 04, 2014

  • Randy was a very caring teacher. We had many conversations regarding best approaches to supporting students who were struggling learners. He will be missed. My thoughts are with Randy's family during this difficult time. - Posted by: Mellissa Proctor (Colleague) on: Jan 03, 2014

  • Randy had a good heart, great talent, a sharp mind and tons of empathy. He was part of our physical journey until recently, he will be a part of our emotional journey forever. - Posted by: Kim Marinelli (Friend) on: Jan 01, 2014

  • We would like to extend our condolences to MaryJane and to the Reid family. We didn't know Randy well but we found him to be so friendly whenever we saw him. Judging by the memories shared here by others, he will be well remembered. - Posted by: Lori and Dain Lanouette and Family () on: Dec 31, 2013

  • There are no words to adequately describe the profound sadness we feel at the loss of our dear friend, Randy. Though we’ve lived many miles apart for over 35 years, there was no questioning the friendship and memories we shared. The “Randy” we knew, was devoted and loyal to both family and friends alike. We shall sorely miss that twinkle in his eye when he smiled, that familiar laugh filtered through the perennial mustache on his upper lip and his happiness to see you, whether it was last year or last millennia! Our thoughts and hearts are with you all, Mary Jane, Mr. and Mrs. Reid, Danny and Maureen. May you find solace in that Randy has and always will hold a very special place in our hearts and minds! All our love, Chris and Richard (aka Dick) - Posted by: Chris & Richard (Childhood Friends) on: Dec 30, 2013

  • Randy was one of the few people that always found the good in any situation and always was filled with empathy for students, staff, friends and people in general. Through the years over many conversations in the staff room and heading out for lunches Randy somehow made the transition from colleague to friend. Many smiles and heartfelt memories were made when Randy stopped apologizing for getting a good hand in Crib and started giving as good as he got with "Take that Stocki". You will be sorely missed! - Posted by: Rick Stocki (colleague(Garden City Collegiate)) on: Dec 30, 2013

  • Mr. Reid was honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. Even though this semester was the first time I had him as a teacher, he was one of the sweetest people I have ever met. I was always so happy to go to math class! He literally made me like math all over again! I will definitely miss his little jokes, laugh and passion for Fresca! Thank you Mr. Reid for everything. My prayers go out to your family. You will be missed like crazy! Words cannot even begin to express our sorrow, you are in our prayers. You're the best! 2 minutes for you! ♥ - Posted by: Kasia Mikus (Student) on: Dec 30, 2013

  • Randy's kindness, deep interest in others, and generous spirit will be a loss for Garden City Collegiate. In our busy lives as teachers, Randy and I never "connected" often but when we did, it was if no time had gone by and we took up our last conversation about our students, a PD issue, or about ourselves, always with a few laughs and always with sincerity. It was Randy's genuine caring for others that is what I will remember most. I never met Mary Jane, but Randy talked about her and I felt in some small way I did know her. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Mary Jane, Randy's family and friends. - Posted by: Zoe Thompson (colleague, Garden City Collegiate ) on: Dec 30, 2013

  • Randy will be so missed by the staff and students at Garden City. He always had a big smile and hearty greeting for anyone and everyone, whether in passing or in a more detailed conversation. He made people feel welcome and I am sure that he has had more of an impact on his students than he could have ever imagined. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. - Posted by: Lisa Whiteside (colleague) on: Dec 30, 2013

  • I was lucky enough to have met Randy 5 years ago when I transferred to Garden City Collegiate. He was an incredibly kind, genuine and gentle soul. I will miss so many things about him; our conversations about life, playing cribbage at lunch, his smile, his laugh and his funny comments made during our curriculum meetings. Randy, it was truly a pleasure to have known you. The advice you have shared over the years will never be forgotten nor will you be. The lunch table will not be the same without you! - Posted by: Julie Biluk (Colleague/Friend) on: Dec 29, 2013

  • I am so sorry to hear of Randy's passing. I haven’t seen Randy since our early years at Lakehead University in 1971-72, just after having attended Lakewood High School in Kenora, but yet he left me with profound memories of being the most mature and well balanced of our grade 13 graduating year. Randy was, as I knew him, a dedicated and successful individual, in both his academic and athletic achievements. I have always held Randy in high regard. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. - Posted by: Gerald, Rodger, and Garry Perry (1967-1971 high school associates) on: Dec 29, 2013

  • Randy was a bright and compassionate soul. He always had a great story to tell and a kind word to share. I never saw him complain, in fact he always wore a smile, and it was clear to all of us at Garden City that Randy loved his work. I am at a loss for his passing, and for his students who will no doubt miss him dearly. It was a pleasure to work with such a sweet person, and such a veteran educator. I will truly miss him. - Posted by: Candice Behrendt (Colleague) on: Dec 29, 2013

  • Such sad news to hear of the passing of a truly kind and caring person. I hope that Randy's family will take consolation in the knowledge that he was much loved, admired and appreciated by students and colleagues alike. Randy will be greatly missed by all! - Posted by: Saundra Lubkey ((Colleague-Garden City Collegiate)) on: Dec 29, 2013

  • I had the privilege of first meeting Randy and Mary Jane as excellent teachers at SNC. Randy was an excellent physical education teacher, coach and friend to his students and was very well liked by our staff. As the years passed by I continued to cross pathways with Randy in his various roles which not only included teacher, but carpenter at my cabin, helper with my various little projects and our discussions of life in general. Randy is what is good in this world and will always be remember as a wonderful human being. God Bless and you will be greatly missed by all. - Posted by: Ronald Buzahora (former principal, and friend) on: Dec 29, 2013

  • I can still remember my first day of teaching at Garden City, I was just a supply teacher at a new school. We met up and discussed our future class plans as I was taking over one of his math classes. I asked if I could come and observe his class, and he accepted willingly. I sat in, and what I observed was a teacher that was full of energy, kindness and compassion for his students. He knew of his students' needs, and encouraged them in whatever ways that he could. What I walked away with from his class that day is something that I still try to apply to my own practice, energy and compassion. Thanks Randy for the lesson! Your smile is truly contagious and your heart is large. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. - Posted by: Roby and Erica Yeung () on: Dec 29, 2013

My sincerest condolences are sent out to all of his friends and family. - Posted by: Kelly enns (Former student) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • Donna and I are deeply saddened by the news of Randy’s passing. He was a true friend who has left me with many fond memories. The memories of being fierce but friendly high school competitors, being Sun Devils team mates, sitting in a duck blind together with Nathan and Baron, searching for Lake of the Woods bass and pickerie together and the wonderful times spent with Randy and Mary Jane will be with us for a lifetime. Our thoughts are sympathies are extended to Randy’s family and friends. He was a fine and gentle person who touched the lives of many and he will be missed. - Posted by: Bruce and Donna Young (Friends) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • Randy was a great fishing buddy. Randy showed me his favorite fishing spots on Lake of the Woods and we managed to keep his father Bill supplied with Walleye during the summer. Summer will not be the same without Randy's guidance and friendship, from Mike, neighbour and friend - Posted by: Mike and Marlene Malley (Friend) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • I'm very sad that Randy - such a caring, knowledgeable and fun person - passed away, much too early. He was a quiet and supportive colleague, not looking for the limelight - always positive and steady. I'll never forget our staff performance of "Swan Lake" at a pep rally, with Randy as the Hunter. May many happy and endearing memories comfort everyone who knew and loved Randy, with my condolences especially to his family and friends. - Posted by: Barbara Kelly (colleague, St. Norbert Collegiate) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • Nearly ten years ago I was teaching ninth grade at Garden City East. Randy's classroom was just down the hall from mine. Periodically, I would walk past his classroom and see how well behaved his group of 9's were compared to mine. Many of his students seemed happy. They seemed to be enjoying the science (or math) lesson that Randy was delivering. I looked at my class and... well, let's just say, I exploded a lot. Now, I know there were moments where Randy had been pushed to his limit too, but most of the time he would have found a way to diffuse whatever the situation was with a joke, a hearty laugh, or even with just a story or a smile. Bottom line is-- Randy had a good heart! He genuinely cared for and respected his students. He treated his colleagues on staff as friends; as family. He tried his best to take care of the people who were important in his day-to-day life. I will miss him. I will miss his laughter. I will miss the compassion he had brought to our school. Rest well, dear friend... and keep smiling. - Posted by: Alan Woo () on: Dec 28, 2013

  • From a student of Mr. Reid, it's sad to see a great man and teacher gone too soon. I had him for a semester in grade 10 and ever since that he would always make small talk in the halls with me. Every time he saw me he'd always stop and talk. He would always ask me how hockey was going and how my classes were. I loved talking Jets with him. Just a very kind hearted man who always put his students first. I always used to joke with him about his resemblance to Paul McLean (Ottawa Senators head coach). Gonna miss walking up the east stairs and seeing him standing by his classroom. Hopefully a teacher continues the minute system in your memory. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and on behalf of the students, "GREAT JOB, 2 MINUTES" - Posted by: Adam wowryk (Student ) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • I am deeply saddened by the sudden passing of my friend, Randy. Working across the hall from Randy for many years always gave me a sense of comfort and security. I could always count on Randy to be there for me when I needed him: to open my classroom door because I had forgot my keys again, to bounce an idea off of when we discussed all the ways we could help students learn math (especially those fractions), to discuss a basketball play or how many fish we caught over the weekend or just have each others back when an issue came up. I will miss Randy dearly. All the students I have taught always referred to Mr. Reid as "An Awesome teacher". May the angels be with you. - Posted by: Darlene Andruchuk (colleague, friend) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • Mr. Reid was an exceptionally kind and warm individual. I know I speak for many students when I say he made the coolest effort to greet us by name or give us a friendly nod when he saw us in the halls. I will always remember how enthusiastic he was about each student following their joy; he was truly a great educator and person. He will be missed. - Posted by: Emma Stefanchuk (Student) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • I feel a great loss with the passing of Randy. Randy welcomed me into the teaching profession with open arms and supported me through my first couple of years. He provided me with advice, encouragement, laughter and above all, a friend. He loved his students and truly enjoyed working with them. Thank you Randy, you will be truly missed. My thoughts are with your family and friends during this difficult time. - Posted by: Stacey Kwiatkowski (Friend/Colleague) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • I think I speak on behalf of all students of Mr. Reid when I say he was an awesome teacher and we all are sadly taken back with the news of your passing. I'll never find a teacher that taught the exact way you did. I want to thank you Mr. Reid for always being that open ear or shoulder to cry on. Going out of your way to lend us money for bus fare or lunch and always always bending over backwards for your students! I still can't believe you're gone, it would have been an Honour to introduce you to my daughter in February. You were the best!! And will be missed like crazy! My prayers go out to your family. We shall meet again & until then. Take care of yourself ! - Posted by: Casandra Habinski (Student) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • Words cannot begin to express the loss of my friend, Randy. Working as closely as we did the past 10 plus years formed a bond that few might understand. He was not a man of many words, so when he did share, I took it to heart and was touched he confided in me. I am a better teacher, friend, and person for having known Randy and know in my heart that he is at peace. You will not be forgotten or replaced in my heart. May you have an eternal life of 29s in crib, 200+ point bucks and more fish than can fit in your boat. You've earned it buddy. - Posted by: James Cove (Friend, Colleague) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • Extremely saddened by the news of Randy's sudden passing. He was a great person who loved working with staff and students. He truly cared about his students. Over the years he coached, participated in intramurals and supported teams as one of the best fans! He will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. - Posted by: Missy Penner (colleague (Garden City Collegiate)) on: Dec 28, 2013
