GIUSEPPE MAGNIFICO Surrounded by family, Giuseppe Magnifico peacefully passed away at the Victoria Hospital on January 3, 2014 at 88 years old. He was predeceased by his wife, Matilde; his sisters Teresa (Crognali) and Lina (Piccirilli); his brother Luigi; his parents Gaetano, Anna Fedele, who tragically died during his birth, and Maria, who raised him into adulthood. Giuseppe will be lovingly remembered by his brother, Tony; children Roberto (Shelley), Teresa (Lucien), Franco (Jean), Adriano (Vicki) and Marco (Elviera). Nonno leaves 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren to mourn his loss, along with many extended family members in both Winnipeg and Italy. Joe, as he was known to many, grew up in the Italian hamlet of Piano Vomano in the central region of Abruzzo. After serving as a member of the 8th Alpino Mountain Regiment, Giuseppe immigrated to Winnipeg in 1948. After early jobs in the construction industry in Winnipeg and Saskatoon, he worked with the Canadian National Railway until retiring in 1985. When he saw his blue-eyed Matilde for the first time, he was smitten. They married in 1950. He took his children on many excursions in the summertime and believed in the mealtime as a lively and delicious place to forge family bonds. He maintained close ties to family in Rome with frequent letter-writing and occasional summertime visits to the homeland. Joe became a part of Winnipeg's vibrant Italian cultural community, joining the local Alpino Chapter and participating as a regular volunteer at Italian Folklorama. Giuseppe had a creative and inventive nature. His "I can fix this" attitude often found new life or new uses for discarded or unworkable items. His entrepreneurial verve and negotiation skills carried him well through many phases of his life and in interactions with others. Provencher and Coronation Parks were venues for many robust games of bocce over the years. He bowled, curled and played cribbage or briscola with similar competitive fire, often earning champion hardware in tournaments or events. Another of Joe's passions was his garden on Lawndale Avenue in the Norwood Flats. He proudly shared vegetables, herbs, fruits with neighbours and family, and often enjoyed family meals under his leafy grape vine canopy with a bottle of homemade vino. Who could ever forget his signature handshake? Truly, he made an impression on everyone he met. Many thanks to the doctors and nurses of Victoria Hospital who provided such quality care and comfort in his last days. A funeral mass to celebrate Giuseppe's life will occur on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Holy Cross Parish on 252 Dubuc Street at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Glenlawn Memorial Gardens at 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550
