HERB (GIBB) GIBBINGS With deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Herb "Gibb" Gibbings on January 12, 2014, in his home that he loved. Gibb will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife Lil, daughters Lynne, Brenda (Rick), sons Glen (Rose), Gerry (Kathy), Gordon (Anne); his grandchildren, Geoffrey (Christine), Brett (Destiny), Carly (Tristan), Korin, Kerri-Lynne (Marc) and great-grandchildren, Austin, Garrett, Cora, Isabelle and his sister Marge Giles. Dad was born in Lakeland, Manitoba on May 31, 1924 to Percy and Hilda Gibbings. He grew up on the farm with his brothers Bill, John, Gordon and sisters Marge and Gladys. He, along with his brothers enlisted in the Armed Forces with dad enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1943 he was drafted to the 65th M.T.B. Flotilla. He went overseas to Liverpool and served in the North Sea and English Channel. He was wounded in action on March 17, 1945 and spent six weeks in the Ganges Hospital in Ipswich, England. While overseas he met his future wife, Lil, at a dance in Paignton, Devon...he saw a "beautiful gypsy girl across the floor". They married in England on July 7, 1945 and eventually made their home in Winnipeg. They raised five children in a small loving home on Erin Street in the west end with wonderful neighbours and friends. Gibb and Lil celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on July 7, 2013. They enjoyed several trips back to England to visit family and friends and many trips to Barbados and Jamaica. A favourite vacation was with the whole family in 1991 to Negril, Jamaica. Gibb was a proud member of the Army and Navy and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #1 for 48 years. He and Lil made many wonderful friendships over the years attending legion functions, and enjoying many fun filled excursions. Dad was a long time member of the White Ensign and enjoyed the friendships of his fellow navy mates. He attended meetings regularly until it became too difficult. He also participated in many Sears get togethers with fellow retirees. Life was filled with family, friends, hockey, football, soccer and woodworking. Dad loved music, playing guitar and family sing alongs. He had an amazing voice and was a beautiful dancer. Dad was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He took great pride in his home and garden and was happiest when he had a project underway. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. We miss him so already but have many wonderful memories to cherish. A celebration of Gibb's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 20, 2014 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Interment will follow in the family niche at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Our family extends warm thanks to Home Care workers, Charlene and Robin whose support enabled dad to stay in his home. In lieu of flowers donations to Children's Hospital or the Dream Factory or a charity of your choice in memory of Gibb would be appreciated. • We were very sorry to hear of Herb's passing. I fondly remember him as "Goober" and he WAS a great Dad. I hadn't seen him for many years, but when I pass thru Radium Hot Springs, BC, I'm always reminded of him, and how he made that VERY long drive from Winnipeg to Canyon Campground to take his family on their many summer vacations. He will surely be missed! Our Deepest Condolences. - Posted by: Bridget, Chris and Nora of Calgary (Blast from the Past on Erin Street) on: Jan 20, 2014

  • One of my most fondest memories of Herb was always how his smile and kindness lite up every day whilst I was growing up. Mr. Gibbings was a real role model for me with always being there if I needed a hand, help with something or even just a hug :) I will always remember his helpful and kind ways with the highest respect.
