WALTER STEPHEN NIMCHUK It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Walter (Wally) Nimchuk on January 29, 2014 at the Vista Park Lodge Care Home. Wally was born in Sapton, MB on May 16, 1924. He grew up on the family farm in Cooks Creek and went to school in Tindal, MB. He took classes at the University of Manitoba and the Dominion Business College, and in 1943 was enlisted in the Canadian Army. He trained in Shilo, MB and served in various administrative positions in Ottawa and Shilo until the end of the war, at which time he resumed his studies and eventually found work in the Transcona shops of the Canadian National Railway. As he worked on his RIA training he started work at an up and coming Crown Corporation, Air Canada. He started work there at the airport converting important historical documents to microfilm, and then later moved to the Finance Division in downtown Winnipeg. It was in Winnipeg that he met his future wife Annie (Ann) Nimchuk, and they were married on September 5, 1953. Shortly before starting their family they moved into the Dorothy Block on Hargrave as the caretakers and for several years looked after an extended family of residents until they moved to their home in St. Boniface. Ann and Wally raised four boys, Warren, Darren, Arlen and Shelden, and Wally worked at Air Canada in the Finance Division up to the time he qualified for earlier retirement in May 1987 at the age of 63. After retirement Wally filled his days with the odd jobs he never seemed to have the time to get to when he was working full time. He served with the Knights of Columbus at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church and was often involved with special projects where he could lend a hand. He was especially fond of his grandchildren Victoria and Cassandra, Alina and Nicholas, and Emma and Mona, and was always delighted to spend time playing with the children while the adults were visiting. Wally is survived by his sister Elizabeth (Liz). In keeping with Wally's wishes, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church located at 390 Marion Street. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Wally may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2, or to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 1160-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. I have had the pleasure of hearing wonderful tales about the adventures of Wally and actually met with him during my travels in Winnipeg. I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences and know that even after this amount of time---the loss is still as poignant, and can colour each and every day that is spent without our loved one! Blessings and best thoughts sent to you and your family Warren. xo - Posted by: Frances C. Harder (Warrens sister in law) on: Mar 13, 2015

I enjoyed being a neighbour to the Nimchuk family. I remember being a little girl and being invited to go across town to Sherbrook Pool with the boys. What a treat it was! The boys had a swing set, sand box with an actual wooden floor, a hockey rink in the winter, and a lovely dog named Mystery. I remember when the wood was removed from the mysterious contraption to reveal a lovely little bridge which was beside the goldfish pond and gooseberry bush. I loved visiting on Boxing Day to see what kind of loot came from Santa. It always felt like an extension of home. My sincere condolences to your families. May God grant him eternal rest and make his memory everlasting. - Posted by: Penny Diffey (Neighbor) on: Jan 30, 2014

On behalf of the Pawlyk family, I send our condolences to Wally's family. Our parents were good friends with Wally and Ann, I think my Dad and Ann were cousins from Saskatchewan. Always enjoyed their company when they came to vist our parents. Nancy Pawlyk - Posted by: Nancy Pawlyk (parents were friends of Wally and Ann's) on: Jan 30, 2014
