OLIVE MAY ATKINS It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Olive May Atkins on February 6, 2014 surrounded by family at Health Sciences Centre. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Thomas James, children Linda (Bert) Smith, Susan (Neil) Ingram, Chris (Sandi) Atkins, grandchildren Eric (Lori), Alan, Michael (Kendra) Smith, Brian, Heather (Mike) Ingram, Sarah Atkins, great-grandson Tyson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Olive was predeceased by her parents Ada and Sydney Chatfield, sisters Betty O'Connor and Jessica Borger, brother Melville Chatfield, and her son Thomas Edward Atkins. Olive was born on November 27, 1929 at the family home on Greene Avenue. She met Tom on a blind date and they married on August 31, 1951. They enjoyed many happy years in their home on Kildare Avenue. Often summer holidays were spent with family and friends at Grand Beach, Pelican Lake and Lee River. The highlight of their travels were the nine trips to Hawaii where they enjoyed snorkeling, shopping and sight-seeing. Each trip became longer than the previous. Olive's career spanned over many years with Great West Life, Office Overload and Drake Personnel. Over the years she made many friends in her travels, at work and in the community. Olive was known for her sense of humour and lovely smile. She had the rare ability to laugh at herself. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and was an avid reader, her favourite books being autobiographies. This passion resonated into her friendships as she had a genuine interest in the personal lives of the people she came in contact with. In most recent years she has cared unselfishly for her husband Tom. She also became close to her Lindenwood Terrace family who were always very supportive and caring. She enjoyed coffee at "Shirley's Cafe", and the many recreational activities planned by the staff. A celebration of Olive's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 14, 2014 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). There will be a private interment at Transcona Cemetery. By request, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

  • So sorry to hear of Ollie's passing. I'm sorry we can't be with you on Friday but you are in our thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Jack and Liz Stewart (family friend) on: Feb 13, 2014

  • I remember Ollie as she was known to us always having a smile or kind comment to us. My Mom and Dad Vera and Joe were neighbours for many years of the Atkins family on Kildare. Ollie was a wonderful person and I pray she is at peace now in God's hands. Take care and may God Bless you all. - Posted by: Shirley Wahl nee Lischynski (Neighbour at 146 Kildare many years ago) on: Feb 11, 2014

  • It is very sad to here of the passing of auntie Ol. I have very fond memories of our families getting together for special summer holidays. Going to Grand Beach and to Lake Killarney. The Atkins lived in the same house for years but they always followed us around to where we lived for their holidays. I remember Uncle Tom building the shuffle board downstairs and all tournaments that we had and the fun when all the relatives and friends got together. Auntie Ol was my moms special friend always even up till a few days ago when they had their last phone conversation. I must say that her smiling face and infectious laugh will remain with me always Rob Laird - Posted by: Rob Laird (family friend) on: Feb 11, 2014
