KARL F. E. GRUPE January 2, 1945 - February 14, 2014 Born in Dinkelhausen, Germany. It is with great sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of Karl, beloved husband of 47 years, to Bernice; father of Karl Jr. and Brigitte; father-in-law of Julia and Mark. Passed away February 14, 2014, at 69 years, with family at his side at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. Karl went peacefully to his heavenly home. He travelled on this planet as far as his feet would carry him and now he will travel with his feet as far as they will take him with his hero "Jesus", and his Heavenly Father, to meet all his family up there. Left to mourn is brother Fritz (Inge) Grupe in Germany, and sister-in-law Essay Grupe in Germany, also brother Heinz (Marcelle) Grupe in Vancouver, sister Edith in Vancouver, and sister Hilde in Nanaimo, BC. His deceased parents, brother Hans, and sister Wilma are in Germany. Karl worked all his life at construction; building homes, hospitals, care homes, big apartments, big grocery stores like Safeway, many commercial buildings too. Then went into his own company Prairie-View Builders Ltd. until the job market was down and was very hard to find work, so he went back to larger firms again to work. These are the companies he worked with during his life: Marwest Construction, Joe Marlow-Greentree Homes, Qualico Construction, Mallcom Construction in Thompson, MB, Quality Construction, Bird Construction, Trident Construction, Boretta Construction and Ersnt Hansch Construction Ltd. For the businesses in Lockport, MB, where we lived, he got the government to put three Canadian flags that fly over the Lockport Bridge for over 35 years now and two poles by the Subway restaurant. He drove in from Winnipeg and kept changing them constantly for events, etc., also going up on the Lockport Bridge every July 1st to celebrate Canada Day, with all kinds of different flags in high heat or rain with his children and friends. Even though we moved to Winnipeg, his heart was very deep into the flags. He wanted people to observe how lucky we all are to be in a safe, peaceful country and celebrate being Canadian, like he was for 52 years, coming from Germany. Karl was also President of the Winnipeg, MB chapter of the World Federalist Movement, combined with the United Nations, to help the world live in peace more with each other. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Karl's memory to "World Federalist Canada", 323 Chapel St., Suite 110, Ottawa, ON K1N 7Z2, in lieu of flowers. Thank you. Funeral will take place Monday, February 24, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., with viewing at the chapel at 1:00 p.m. prior to service at Wheeler Funeral Chapel, located at 1800 Day St. in Transcona. Please mail any cards to the "Grupe Family", in care of 1800 Day St., Winnipeg, MB R2C 1E8. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I worked for Karl during summers while I was in university. Despite my questionable skills he took me back every spring and kept me on even when things were slow. He taught me a good deal about hard work. I'm sorry to hear of his passing. - Posted by: Randy Brandt (Former employee) on: Aug 06, 2015

  • I met Karl in 2002 and worked with him for about 7 or 8 years. I will remember Karl for his good humor, kindness and his constant passion for all the flags from different nations that he would so proudly speak about and how truly blessed that each Canadian should be for having the freedoms and opportunities that our country has to offer - Posted by: Dave Lane () on: Feb 23, 2014

  • So sorry to hear of Karl's passing. My Prayers and thoughts go out to you Bernice and your family. Karl was "such" a gentleman and kind person. Gail - Posted by: Gail Kotowich (met at Toastmasters in Selkirk) on: Feb 22, 2014
