STEVEN MICHAEL PILOT January 9, 1930 - April 19, 2014 It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Steven Michael Pilot, father, grandfather and good friend who passed away peacefully at the age of 84 years, at the St. Boniface Hospital, Palliative Care Unit. Steve was born in Iroquois Falls, Ontario to parents, Mike and Stella Pilot. He attended Iroquois Falls High School where he developed his passion for sports. Steve married Ilona Oravkin in 1951 and moved to Timmins, Ontario where he worked for a finance company. His son, Greg was born in 1952. Steve then moved his family to Kirkland Lake where he began his career as the General Sales Manager for the local Ford Dealership. Steve's son, Dana was born in 1961. While in Kirkland Lake Steve was part of a group who started up a Kirkland Lake ski hill called Raven Mountain; which sparked his lifelong passion for skiing. In 1965, Steve set out to find a new future for his family. Travelling across Canada he fell in love with Winnipeg and shortly thereafter moved his wife, Elaine and sons, Greg and Dana there; where he began a career in the insurance industry. After one year, Steve bought the company he worked for, renaming it S.M. Pilot Agency. He worked until a few months prior to his passing. Steve and Elaine divorced; Steve then met Christine Swanston through his love of sailing. He and Chris enjoyed sailing on Lake of the Woods, playing cards and travelling abroad until Christine passed in 1994. Steve was predeceased by his parents and his son, Dana. He is survived by his son, Greg (Christina), daughter-in-law, Sherril and four grandchildren: Dania, Nicholas, Dillon and Matthew. Steve also leaves behind close friends who were like his family, who cared for him until the end: Monir and Connie Nasif, Ava Mohammed and Gill Tchir; as well as the "Boys' Siam and Snowball. Steve was an amazing man with a tremendous ZEST for life - he made a difference in the lives of those he met. All who met Steve met a friend forever. He will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank Dr. Van Jaarsveldt, Dr. Unrah, home care nurses and staff under Christine Springer as well as all the staff at St. Boniface Hospital, Palliative Care Unit. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Steve may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. In keeping with Steve's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Windsor Park United Church, 1062 Autumnwood Drive. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • A big man with a big smile, a big laugh and an even bigger heart. Always in a hurry, glasses perched on his head and coat flapping. Sail on to a safe port. - Posted by: Deborah (co-worker from Citadel) on: Feb 20, 2015

  • My father, Rod Carson, worked with Steve for nearly 50 years! I remember as a kid going skiing at Agazzi ski hill in Manitoba. (long since closed down). Steve was there, as was our family, most weekends during the winter. Steve was a great guy and always caring about others. I will always remember his voice, his laugh, and the ever-present cigarette hanging from his lips! He loved his smoking and I appreciated sitting down to a coffee and numerous cigarettes with Steve. He smoked about 4 cigs to my 1!~ It was a pleasure to know him and he is thought about occasionally.....especially when I'm at Lake of the Woods which was one of his favorite places. Rest in Peace Steve! Best Regards from Greg Carson and family. - Posted by: Greg Carson (Aquaintance) on: Jul 10, 2014

  • Steve's Mother was like my Baba. She was a great friend to my Mom who came to Canada from Poland in 1968. Over the years that I grew up, we would get together and Steve always made a point of dropping in to visit. When Mrs. Pilot passed away in 1993, my Mom was always vigilent and honoured her dear friend's grave, bringing flowers and candles to the site. These acts of loving remembrance were always appreciated by Steve. We kept in contact over the years however last summer was the last time I spoke to Steve. Since the loss of his son and then his own illness, alot of time has passed that we can never get back. I took for granted that this dear man would be around when my Daughter, Paige and I would finally take that trip out to Winnepeg. Steve always insisted that we come out to stay with him and he'd take us sailing. I regret that we never had that chance. I will miss that geniune man that always took the time to call to say hi, email a joke and wish seasons greetings with a card. Deepest Sympathies to the Pilot family.....Steve will always be remembered with such fondness - Posted by: Zoreena Liznick (friend from Iroquois Falls ) on: May 15, 2014

  • Steve was such a wonderful neighbour. He proudly talked about the amazing garden he created in the front yard. He was so sad losing the big pine tree - but replaced it with such beautiful space. I will miss his cheery hellos, always having time to stop for a chat. We will miss such a wonderful neighbour. - Posted by: Laurie and Drew Forrest (neighbour) on: Apr 26, 2014

  • It is so sad to lose such a dear friend, I have so many fond memories of our visits and lunches together. I will miss those special times. - Posted by: Cheryl Boychuk (Friend) on: Apr 25, 2014

  • Dear Steve, You've had a genuine love and personal caring for all your clients. You were always giving of your time and pleasures. I would say as a co-associate in the business for 45 years, there was always respect and concern for each other. Last year I was hospitalized several times and you always came in with a smile and some jokes to share, cheering me on. Marilyn and I will miss your phone calls and visits. We shared many special times. Now, you're free from the body, but your spirit will go on. Your family will miss you and your caring ways. May they have peace sharing their memories of you. Much love from Rodney and Marilyn. - Posted by: Rodney and Marilyn Carson () on: Apr 24, 2014
