Born: Aug 06, 1930
Date of Passing: May 16, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFRED SITAR August 6 1930 - May 16 2014 Sadly, on May 16, 2014 at 05:16 p.m. at Riverview Health Centre, Fred Sitar, surrounded by family, quietly slipped away after a battle with cancer. Fred was born on August 6, 1930 in St. Boniface Hospital to John and Stella Sitar. Life was hard for his Mom, his sister Rose and himself as they followed his Dad around to his various postings with the railroad. Fred left home as a young boy to board in Winnipeg to attend school. At age 17, he moved to Port Arthur ON to begin his own railroad career at CN, then to VIA, as a locomotive engineer, a job he absolutely loved. Dad retired at age 65 in August 1995. But Dad had an incredible mind for numbers and math, and maybe missed a calling as an accountant! Fred had a love for baseball, curling, the stock market, and all that railroading made him a stickler for the correct time. He avidly followed the news, and never missed an episode of Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune. One year he and Mom discovered Reno on a waylaid camping trip, and so began a real interest in the casino life. He played the accordion, in his youth he played in a band, and still loved the lively polka beat. Dad and Mom were a well known fixture in the neighbourhood and if their garage door wasn't open and they weren't in their lawn chairs, something was amiss! Fred is survived by Sylvia, his wife of 57 years, children Cheryl (Ted), Darlene (Pete), John, Sandra (Marc), his sister Rose (Paul deceased) and her children and their families, brother-in-law Myrnie (Jean) and their family. We will all miss him terribly, and so will countless more family, friends and neighbours. His easygoing nature made him so likable to everyone. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home at 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Dad loved flowers and they would be graciously accepted, but if you wish, you can make a donation to Riverview Health Centre. The staff on 3E took such wonderful care of Dad, thanks to you all. Love you Dad! Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

I am sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad. If only we could make them young and healthy again... Sandi, he raised you with you greatest gift a parent can, the ability to love so much that we will miss them terribly. - Posted by: Vivian Chartofylax (Friend of Sandi & Marc) on: May 24, 2014

We are sincerely sorry for your loss Sylvia. It was impossible not to like Fred. He was at once charming and gentle and humorous all rolled into one. His sense of humor was infectious to all that were from time to time graced to be in his presence. He will be remembered and sadly missed by all that had the privilege of knowing him. - Posted by: Bernard & Margaret Struch (Friend/aquaitance) on: May 22, 2014
