STEPHEN CRAIG WATSON It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen Craig Watson on Wednesday, June 4, 2014. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones after a hard fought battle with cancer. Stephen is survived by his wife Felicidade Borba, his daughter Lara, his son Graham, his father Kenneth Watson, brothers Grant and Blair, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. Stephen was predeceased by his mom Alice Watson. Stephen was born in Winnipeg on May 19, 1955. Stephen lived a full and happy life. He had a deep love for his family, a kind and generous spirit, a strong sense of responsibility, a keen intelligence and a funny sense of humour. He loved travelling, camping, reading, music, photography, and spending time with friends and family. Economics always interested him and shaped his career choices which spanned academia, government, and the private sector. He lectured at the University of Manitoba in the Department of Economics. He then worked for the provincial departments of Industry Trade and Tourism, and then Finance. After retiring from the province, he became an investment advisor with MGI Securities. We would like to thank our family and friends for their incredible support. We would also like to extend our thanks to the staff of the CancerCare Program at the Health Sciences Centre as well as the Palliative Care Program both in the community and in the St. Boniface Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. As per Stephen's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Stephen's Life will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street, Winnipeg. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I just learned of Stephen's death and wanted to share my condolences with Felicidade and family. Stephen and I were graduate students in economics together at McGill many years ago. He was passionate about economics, politics and about life. I too was raised in Winnipeg and am proud of my roots there, but I could never match Stephen's passion for returning to Manitoba to contribute to the province's future. I have no doubt that he made his mark as a public servant, an educator and a leader in the community. - Posted by: Glen Hodgson (fellow graduate student in economics, McGill University, 1978-81) on: Aug 25, 2014

  • I would like to extend my condolences and prayers to Stephen's family. Stephen was a joy to know. Some people in this world inspire confidence and trust - Stephen was that kind of person. I will miss his friendship and astute counsel. - Posted by: Tami Reynolds (friend and client) on: Jun 19, 2014

  • I only met Stephen and his family once at a family reunion in 2012 in Victoria, BC. I found him an engaging person with many different interests. My sincere condolences. - Posted by: Mark Heath () on: Jun 09, 2014

  • Stephen is sadly missed. I first met him while completing my studies in economics at the University of Manitoba and later served under him in several capacities with the Manitoba Government. I always found him to be an inspiration and an example to follow in his approach to work and by his cordial and supportive relations with colleagues and co-workers. He will live on in memory. - Posted by: cHRIS aNDERSON () on: Jun 08, 2014

  • I offer my sincere condolences to Stephen's wife, daughter, son and father. I have worked and known Stephen since the 1980's when he started in the Dept. of Industry, Trade & Tourism. We worked together for a short while in the Trade Division from 1988 to 1992. Working with Stephen was an honour. He was so smart, caring, attentive and always wore a smile. On a personal level, as we were talking about dogs one day, I mentioned the name of a breeder who was looking for a good home for her retired mothers. Stephen and his wife adopted the mother of my sister's dog. He then later acquired another Bichon Frisee. The year I retired in 2003, he had recently become a new father to a baby girl and he was so proud of that. I'm so happy to find out he also had a son. May your memories of Stephen as a son, husband and father be your strength. His spirit will always be with you and there when you need him. - Posted by: Irene Martin (Co-Worker) on: Jun 07, 2014

  • Felicidade, Lara and Graham, we are truly saddened and extend our heartfelt sympathies to you. - Posted by: Goret Bento & John Bento (Cousin) on: Jun 07, 2014
