Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTHOMAS JAMES ATKINS It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Thomas James Atkins on June 21, 2014 at the Maples Personal Care Home. Left to cherish his memory are his children Linda (Bert) Smith, Susan (Neil) Ingram, Chris (Sandi) Atkins, grandchildren Eric (Lori), Alan, Michael (Kendra) Smith, Brian, Heather (Mike) Ingram, Sarah Atkins, great-grandson Tyson, sister Shirley Thompson, and many nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his wife Olive, parents Esther and Alfred, brothers Donald and Ralph, sister Margaret Stewart, and his son Thomas Edward Atkins. Dad was born on January 30, 1927 and grew up in the family home on Victoria Avenue in Transcona. He married Mum on August 31, 1951 and they spent most of their married life on Kildare Avenue where they raised their family and later retired. Dad built Mum her "dream gazebo" in their backyard where they could enjoy their morning coffees and late afternoon happy hours. Dad's career spanned 40 years at the CN working as a blacksmith's helper, welder, and later as general foreman. After retirement in 1983 he enjoyed working part-time for the Manitoba Safety Council. Dad loved watching sports and also enjoyed participating in them. He was an avid curler in the winter and golfer in the summer achieving three holes-in-one. He spent many hours tending his vegetable and flower gardens. Cooking was one of his passions from a young age. He was always called upon to carve the turkey or roast at family dinners. He was a jack-of-all-trades with woodworking being his favourite. He was very patient and meticulous with what he built. He was a quiet man who showed his love and caring with actions more than words. He especially loved children and most of all his grandchildren who brought out his playful side. A special thank you to the staff at the Maples for their attentiveness and compassion in caring for Dad and treating him with respect and dignity over the last seven years. His family found comfort in knowing he was well cared for. By request, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. A celebration of Dad's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). There will be a private interment. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550
