NORMAN ARCHER ANDERSON Peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2014 Norman Anderson was called home at the age of 84 years. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Karen (Edwin) Andreychuk of Flin Flon; son Kim (Thora) Anderson of Winnipeg; grandsons Garrett and Brayden (Emily) Anderson (Thunder Bay); special friend Margaret Tonn, as well as sisters Edith (Bill) Hardy, Peggy (Al) McKay, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 46 years, Diane (nee Gauthier), and sister Beth (Kinnear). Dad was born in Elm Creek, MB on December 3, 1929. He was born to Alfred and Matilda Anderson. He loved to share the memories with us of his younger years on the farm. He was always very athletic, and had a passion for the game of hockey. At the age of 15, he was playing for the Boissevain Juvenile "B" hockey team and won the Manitoba Championship. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted to the Detroit junior team, although opted to continue his lifelong career at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting in Flin Flon, MB. It was there that he met Mom in 1956 and they were married December 2, 1957. They loved to water ski and hike at the many beautiful lakes in the area, and built their life raising Karen and Kim. Dad retired from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting after 43 years, and enjoyed a few years of retirement with Mom travelling to Kelowna, BC during the winters. He and Mom moved into Winnipeg in 1991, where they spent their last years together. A "Celebration of Life" will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, on Friday, July 25 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow at a later date in Elm Creek Cemetery. The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the beautiful staff at Nova Vista Lodge. Their care and support to our Dad was truly exceptional. Don't think of him as gone away his journey's just begun, life holds so many facets this earth is only one. Just think of him as resting from the sorrows and the tears in a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days and years. Think how he must be wishing that we could know today how nothing but our sadness can really pass away. And think of him as living in the hearts of those he touched... for nothing loved is ever lost and he was loved so much. "Rest in Peace Our Dad, Grandpa, Brother and Uncle...You will Forever be Remembered and in Our Hearts!" Cropo Funeral Chapel, 204-586-8044

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • We got to know Norman when his wife Diane attended our club. For years he came in towards the end of the day and would sit in and play "Whisk" with us. He continued this after Diane's passing. We have missed Norman and his great sense of humor. Our deepest sympathy to his family. - Posted by: High Steppers Senior Club (Friends) on: Jul 24, 2014

  • Kim & Thora, Our deepest condolences to you and your family. You are in our thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Michelle and Gord Basaraba (Friend) on: Jul 22, 2014

  • I was 10 years old when 'Normie' - as he was called - played hockey in Boissevain. In 1948, he and his teammates won the Provincial Juvenile Championship. My father, a farmer, was an avid, often rabid, supporter of this team and an enthusiastic fan of 'Normie'. I remember seeing many of the games, but especially, I remember my father's excitement with this team. He adulated coach Marino, knew every move of every player. He lived this team. In 2000, I began 2 years of research and writing about this time and this team. I wanted to recreate the excitement my father - and the community - had lived. After gleaning newspapers, interviewing each player several times and hearing the stories of community hockey fans who had enjoyed this team, I completed my 20 page recreation. In 2004, these players came to Boissevain for a reunion at the Red Coat Inn, the location of the 'rink' they had played in. 'Normie', too, was there to share stories. It was one great evening. Bob Burton, a member of that team - and the organizer of the reunion, and I will attend the funeral on Friday. We too want to celebrate Norman's life with you, celebrate the memories of this formerly gifted athlete - the great skater, the intelligent reader of 'the ice', the gifted goal scorer. - Posted by: Rudi Engbrfecht () on: Jul 22, 2014
