I was shocked and saddened to learn today of Michelle's passing. As counsel for and as a negotiator for management, I dealt with her in her capacity as a rep and as a negotiator and always had the same impression - she was a person who cared about the members, acted with intelligence and integrity and did a terrific job, without engaging in unnecessary grandstanding. My condolences to her family and her colleagues at the UFCW. - Posted by: Robin Kersey (Business acquaintance) on: Sep 20, 2014

So sorry that I am still away and won't be able to attend the celebration of Michelle's life. I have been privileged to work with Michelle for many years both at Safeway and in the labour movement. I have seldom met anyone so committed to social justice. Her commitment to her members was exemplary. Her passing is a great loss for many people whose lives she has touched including mine. But I am sure few feel that loss as deeply as her family. Kent, please accept my condolences and pass them to the rest of Michelle's family. - Posted by: Susan Hart-Kulbaba (Co-worker) on: Sep 17, 2014

I was saddened to learn about Michelle's passing. I met Michelle when I was working in labour relations with Safeway in Winnipeg. My management colleagues in retail recall Michelle as a very good and diligent employee while working in the stores. I had occasion to work with Michelle when she worked for UFCW on resolving employee issues. I remember her as sincere and passionate about her work as a representative of UFCW. She was a very pleasant person. I would like to express my sincere condolences to Michelle's family and friends. I am shocked and dismayed to learn of Michelle's passing. I wish I had known she was ill. My heart and thoughts are with Kent and her family at this most difficult time. I will miss her. Few friends are able to pick up wherever they left off no matter how long they have not seen each other. Michelle was one of those people. She was a sweet and gentle soul. - Posted by: Brenda Poersch (Friend) on: Sep 16, 2014

My condolences to the Family and the entire world. I have known Michelle for years, first as one of her bargaining unit Members at Safeway, then as part of her negotiating team, when she negotiated the last Arctic Co-operatives contract. She had a passion for life that I have never seen anywhere else and truly cared about making the world a better place to live for everyone. The world has lost a great human being and she will be missed. RIP Michelle, you left us way to early but you have more than earned it. - Posted by: Craig Huard (Friend) on: Sep 15, 2014

I am so sorry that Michelle has passed away. She was one of the hardest working people I ever met. UFCW Local 832 members knew that Michelle was always in their corner. Michelle was so committed to helping people that she became active in the NDP. She embraced the extra responsibility for the good of workers and all Manitobans. She was instrumental in the election of many New Democrats. Above all, Michelle was a good person, kind and principled, but with that steel core needed to get the job done. I will miss her. My deepest condolences to Michelle's family. - Posted by: Darlene Dziewit (Friend and Colleague) on: Sep 15, 2014

My condolences to Kent and the family. Words can't say how sorry I am for your loss. I met Michelle through U.F.C.W Local 832 and had the pleasure of working with her as our union rep and recently as our negotiator for Vista Park Lodge. Her smile and easy going personality will be missed by all who knew her. Always giving a 110% in everything that she had done. Whether it was for the members or for the local. She was a legacy in her own time. And I for one learned a lot from her. Hopefully her teachings and kind heart will live on in all of us. R.I.P. Michelle has been by my side since the first day I put my name in the hat and decided to run for MLA. Never underestimate the strength behind a quiet exterior. The Southdale NDP will be at great loss without Michelle - she has been our rock since 2007. I know how much we've all come to depend on her, my heart goes out to family and friends who will miss her dearly. She left a mark on all of us. Thank you for sharing her with us. - Posted by: Erin Selby (friend) on: Sep 14, 2014

So saddened to hear of Michelle's passing. I remember the big family gatherings for special occasions, the day's spent at the cabin our Grandfather built, and babysitting Michelle, James and Aline. Sorry I will not be able to make it to Winnipeg for the Manorial, but know my thoughts and prayers are with you as you remember Michelle. "Death is no more than passing from one room into another. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Michelle's passing. My deepest condolences to her family and friends. I remember Michelle at school as someone who befriended and respected all. Her gentle smile was ever present and her quiet sense of humour made her someone enjoyable to be around. She's a person that's easy to bring to mind even after years of being out of touch. Fifty is so young. It's hard to believe one of our classmates is gone! However, Michelle will never be far from people's minds and whenever I think back on my years at SMA hers is a face and personality that comes up in slideshow of memories. Rest in peace Michelle and God's strength to all who will miss you. - Posted by: Josefa Villafana. (St. Mary's Academy classmate) on: Sep 13, 2014

I was shocked to hear of Michelle's passing. Michelle will be truly missed by the membership UFCW Local 832 of which I am proud to be a member. She was our rep for a while and was always there when you needed her. She also came often when she was JLM assignment to make sure the hours always worked to the benefit of the membership. She is no doubt missed by her own family and no less by her Union sisters and brothers. RIP Michelle. - Posted by: Don Burroughs (Friend) on: Sep 11, 2014

I met Michelle when she came to work on my first election campaign in 1999. She was a passionate trade unionist and a believer in social justice. Her smile lit up a room. She was one of the most positive, energetic, caring people I have ever encountered. I am so sad to hear of her passing. She will be sadly missed by many. - Posted by: Honorable Ron Lemieux (Colleague) on: Sep 10, 2014

Michelle and I go back 25 yrs to her Safeway days. We worked together at Grant Park Safeway as cashiers, and then we both were the Bulk Foods girls together. Our time together was short, for she left to work at UFCW 832 on special assignment for 6 months and never returned. They knew a good thing when found her. As sad as I was for losing her to her new adventure, I knew that's where her heart was. She loved helping members. She always glowed when talking about them. When she left I assumed her position of shop steward. They were big shoes to fill. She was warm, understanding, always professional, had time to listen and a genuine good person. My deepest sympathy to her family friends & members I will miss you my friend, my sister in solidarity xo - Posted by: Elaine (Friend) on: Sep 10, 2014

To the family: Please accept my most heartfelt condolences. I have had the privilege of working with Michelle. Michelle had the compassion and resilience to weather difficult situations with serenity. She cared deeply for the union members she served. Always a first class lady with proper etiquette and a quick wit, she inspired me to a new level of appreciation. Michelle will be greatly missed by those whose hearts she touched including mine. Rest in Peace Michelle. - Posted by: Jerry Kies (colleague and friend.) on: Sep 09, 2014
