GERALD MARSHALL MCQUOID It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather on October 20, 2014 at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 79. He was predeceased by his father James, mother Lila, brothers David and Harvey; his daughter Tammie; father-in-law Wallace, mother-in-law Sarah; brothers-in-law William Anderson and Phillip Myre. Gerald will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Silvana of Winnipeg MB, son Terry McQuoid (Diane) of Iroquois Falls, ON; daughters Sonya McQuoid of Gander, NL, Shelley Evans (Dan) of Churchill, MB and Monica McQuoid of Winnipeg, MB; grandchildren Jennifer McQuoid of Red Deer, AB, Amy McQuoid (Chris) of Winnipeg, MB and Liam and Tierney Evans of Churchill, MB; brother Bruce (Karen) of North Bay, ON and brother-in-law Ted Rose (Rose Marie) Nipissing, ON; sisters-in-law Carol McQuoid of North Bay, ON, Virginia Anderson of Powassan, ON and Betty Myre of Calgary, AB; nieces and nephews and special friends. His adventure started on January 22, 1935 in Oshawa, ON and continued after he married Silvana on August 24, 1957. For a short while, he worked as a milkman in North Bay, ON, and then he became a police officer. Though the job provided him with a source of adventure, he aspired to become a teacher to make a positive difference in the lives of children. After upgrading at high school while working the night shift, he graduated with a Grade 12 Diploma. He went back to the day shift and started taking university courses at night in order to get into Teacher's College. With a young family at home, Gerald was very determined to achieve his goals. He became a teacher and developed a wandering soul, wanting to teach his way west. Moosonee, Kashechewan, Shoal Lake and South Bay Mines in Ontario were places that he explored with his family. Upon moving to Snow Lake, Gerald and his family settled in for a long stay of 27 years. It was there that he nurtured his entrepreneurial dream and became the co-owner of McQuoid's Greenhouses. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, Gerald was forced to adjust his dreams by moving to Winnipeg and settling into apartment life. He loved to bake and in the months before Christmas, Gerald would go through many cookbooks looking for different Christmas baking recipes. Family and friends looked forward to being recipients of his baking, especially his famous Christmas cake. He loved going to the St. Norbert Farmers' Market every Saturday in the summer and stopping in at Tim Horton's for a medium "Double Double". Our family would like to extend our gratitude to the staff at Victoria General Hospital 4 South for the care and compassion that was provided to Gerald. Memorial service will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home at 455 Lagimodiere Blvd in Winnipeg, MB on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Jim Barber presiding. Interment will follow at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Those wishing to honour Gerald's memory may consider a donation to the Manitoba Chapter of the Canadian Liver Foundation or the Union Gospel Mission. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • We have only now learned of the lose of an old friend. Our last meeting was at Stayner Camp grounds where we shared time with Gerald's family. Our daughter Heather enjoyed the friendship with your son by correspondence for quite a while. We appreciated the work you two did among the first Nations people and were sorry to lose contact. Very fond memories of our time together as students at Lorne Park. Blessings to you Silvana and your family on the lose of a great guy! - Posted by: Pat and Roger Harris (Former school chums at Lorne Park College) on: Dec 23, 2015

  • My condolences go out to Gerald's family. I worked at Lennox Bell Lodge for 21 years where I met Gerald and Silvana. They stayed at the lodge when they came in for medical appointments and I cherish our many, many long conversations. We became forever friends and when it came time for them to move into Winnipeg because of health issues I was so very happy they decided to move into the apartment building Jack and I were living in. I'll keep the curtains open Silvana and I am just a glance away. Rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: Myrna Hill (Friend) on: Oct 24, 2014

  • We fondly remember Gerald as a friend, and as a teaching colleague for many years in Snow Lake. No one had bigger dreams than Gerald. He never stopped dreaming and scheming. Our sincere condolences, the Moncaster family - Posted by: Beth, Ross and children (friends) on: Oct 24, 2014
