NELL SMERCHANSKY Nell passed peacefully on October 23, 2014 at the age of 101 years with her family at her side. Beloved wife of the late Joseph Smerchansky; mother of Sonia Stecky (Ron), Bill Shanski (Karen), Cynthia Grant (Allan), Deanne Emberley (Keith), Delores Sykes (George); Baba to Liana Stecky, Lisa Stecky, Kurt Shanski, Karla Andrews, Andrea Grant, Ian Grant, Lindsey Baranowski, Tyler Emberley, Linda Campbell, Colby Sykes, Chelsey Sykes and nine great-grandchildren; auntie to many nieces and nephews, especially Wally who visited her regularly. Nell was predeceased by her parents Prokop and Anna Hryhoryshyn and her siblings Bill, Pauline Rubashewsky, Bessie Penner, Teenie Borysyk, Mary Koshilka. Nell was born in Arran, SK on February 13, 1913 and moved to Winnipeg in her teens to complete her education. She worked at the Fort Garry Hotel before marrying Joe in 1940. They raised their family and cared for her parents in East Kildonan. She was a lifelong member of Holy Eucharist Parish. Nell and Joe holidayed in Mexico, Hawaii and Florida, visited family in Vancouver, Ottawa, Val d'Or and Montreal. But they loved spending their summers at their Falcon Lake cottage the most. Family was paramount for Nell and Joe. They were always excited to babysit kids and pets - Nell would keep everyone fed while Joe entertained. We have beautiful memories of homemade holopchi, perohy, pickles, and sweets with lots of love and laughter. Mom will be remembered for her beautiful flowers, and for tending her perennial rock gardens at Falcon Lake. Mom left the world with the same grace and strength she was known for throughout her life. She never complained and always thought about others before she thought of herself. We all feel so blessed to have had her in our lives, so bright and caring to the end. A heartfelt thank you to the compassionate, dedicated staff of Holy Family Home St. Paul's Unit, who enriched her last four years. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Interment to follow in Elmwood Cemetery, 88 Hespeler Avenue.
