FRED (FREDDIE) MESTDAGH June 14, 1935 - October 18, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Fred on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the age of 79 years. Born and raised in St. Boniface, Fred was predeceased by his parents Frederic and Mary, his brothers Frank and Alphonsé (Kelly), and his sister-in-law Christine. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 56 years, Geraldine (Gerry), his children Vicki (Gary) Gilhen, Lisa and Michael Mestdagh, his grandchildren Krista (Scott) Hill, Jenna and Kayla Gilhen and Jaymee and Brad Fuczek, as well as sister-in-law, Georgette Mestdagh, and numerous nieces and nephews. Fred was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved spending time with his family and friends. His good nature and sense of humour put a smile on everyone's face. Dad had many wonderful memories spending time with family and friends at VI LI MI Acres in Ostenfeld, Manitoba. Time was spent sitting by the campfire, swimming, snowmobiling, and appreciating the serenity of nature. He was an active volunteer with the Cardinal Swim Club for many years. Dad also enjoyed travelling and spending time down south with his family during the winter. He also had a passion for Crossword, Sudoku and Cryptoquote puzzles. Fred will be remembered for his 35 years of service with the City of Winnipeg. This included the St. Boniface Parks Board, Parks and Facilities (pools and arenas). Prior to his retirement in 1986, Fred served as Superintendent of Grounds for the St. Boniface / St. Vital Region. He took great pride in being instrumental in maintaining beautiful, park-like settings for all to enjoy. A celebration of Fred's life will be held at St. Bartholomew Anglican Church, 881 Autumnwood Drive, Windsor Park on Saturday, November 1 at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Dr. Lee Titterington will be officiating. A private interment will be held for family. Special thanks to the staff at the Life Care Medical Centre in Rosseau, Minnesota, paramedics, and the Life Flight Crew. Thank you to all doctors, nurses, and health care staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their excellent care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200-6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 0K6 or a charity of your choice. Always in our hearts. My sincere condolences Gerry and family. Fred was a very special person with a smile and kind word for everybody. He made the workplace a positive environment and fun place for all. Freds' 35 year contribution to the development and enhancement of the parks, athletic fields and sport facilities in St.Boniface and St. Vital Communities have and will continue to be his proud legacy for future generations to enjoy. I have wonderful memories of our 17 years working together and sharing our weekly Lotto dreams. The memories are forever. God has received another Angel who we will miss dearly. We have only known Fred and Gerry for one year as we're the new neighbours but they immediately became family to us. They welcomed us with open arms into the area. So the loss of a beautiful soul, like Fred's, is heartbreaking. Our little community, is never going to be same. Fred, took such pride in our area, as he was a master in landscaping and he was always there to give a helping hand and advice to whoever wanted and needed him. We will miss his Smile, Hhs "Good Mornings" across the yard and his family stories that he loved to share. We take peace in knowing that he will be looking over his lovely family and our neighbourhood from heaven. Sleep Well, Dear Friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Our deepest sympathies to everyone who loved him and who will miss him. - Posted by: Pat and Tim Pomanski (neighbour) on: Oct 25, 2014
