Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEMILIO ABIUSI March 15, 1929 - November 1, 2014 It is with great sadness that the family of Emilio Abiusi wish to announce his passing on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at St. Joseph's Nursing Home, at 85 years of age. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Sera. He is lovingly remembered by his wife and children Toni (Rob), Carmela (Ralph) and Jack (Maria); his grandchildren, David, Adam, Marc, Justin, Emilio, Francesca and Jackson, and great-grandchildren Arianna and Giulia. Emilio was predeceased by his two younger sisters Giacomina and Maria in Winnipeg, and brother Antonio as a youth in Italy. Emilio was born in Southern Italy in the village of Miglierina at a time of turmoil and uncertain destiny. Belonging to an established and educated family, his childhood began with great opportunity, but his world was overturned when at 12 years of age his father died. To support his mother and their young family, Emilio went to work at the village blacksmith shop with his Uncle Pepino. Dad surely developed his courage and strength of character in this trying time. Dad's faith and strength were his pillars as he led his family from poverty to Canada in the 1950s. Dad married Sera Loschiavo in 1957 and settled in Winnipeg following the path of many Italians immigrants. Working in construction, Dad was a hard worker and excellent provider who made it his mission to bring his extended family to Canada. His happiest moments were held after his extended family including mother, sister and many cousins were reunited in the west end of Winnipeg. While many of his Italian counterparts longed to return to Italy, Dad became a proud Canadian and never had a strong desire to leave. He loved Winnipeg and believed that Canada was the greatest country in the world. Dad lived a full and meaningful life imparting his children with his work ethic and his love for family, but he found his greatest joy and purpose being a Nonno. His grandchildren were blessed to have a Nonno that was playful, loving and supportive of them. Special thanks to the home care workers and staff at St. Joseph's for their loving care of Dad these past five years as he struggled with Alzheimer's, and a special thanks to his best friend and brother-in-law Pasquale Anastasio for his dedicated love and support of Dad. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave. Family condolences will be received one hour prior to the Mass. Interment in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Italian Canadian Foundation of Manitoba.
