I met Bernie in the 1960s when I was an active young Liberal and President of the St. Boniface Young Liberals. Bernie always gave us his back because he believed that young people were the future. He strongly supported lowering the voting age from 21 to 18 when others refused to support it. He also helped many young people advance in their careers regardless of political affiliation. He was always transparent and available. He was a natural leader and strong family man. My condolences to Sheila and family. Shelia - I am so sad to hear my "hero" has now become an angel. It was Bernie who came to rescue the Hughes family, who were operating the Transcona News, when their husband and father passed away. We were devastated and didn’t know who to turn to. We were left with a condemned building and soon to be out of business. One day, soon after, we received a call from Bernie. He said “I have selected a property across from the library to have a building constructed for you. This will be your building. Just make payments and you will own it in twenty five years”. I am sure Bernie also contacted our suppliers and asked them to help us and they did. He was very persuasive. Bernie’s relationship with my father, mother and the newspaper, started when he was in high school. He used to write a column in the Transcona News from time to time. After, when I was operating the newspaper with my mother, I often asked for his mentoring. When we were in between editors, I often asked Bernie to be a contributing editor and he complied without hesitation. Even then, He was our guardian angel. I often tell this story about Bernie whenever I am asked about my family background. Many more stories can be told about Bernie’s contributions to the people and the City of Transcona. We dearly loved and respected Bernie. He will always be fondly remembered. Please say goodbye and God Bless for me. Respectfully yours, Bob Hughes - Posted by: Bob Hughes (Friend) on: Nov 13, 2014
