MAX PRESSMAN January 2, 1924 - December 20, 2014 On December 20, 2014 at the Simkin Centre, Max Pressman passed away at the age of 90. He was predeceased by his wife, Molly, all six of his siblings and their spouses. Lovingly remembered by his children, Selma (Murray), Faye (Warren), and David (Marilyn), his grandchildren, Daniel and Greg, Hilary, Deborah (Michael) and Kayleigh. He also has two great-grandchildren, Hugo and Marcus. He will also be missed by his sister-in-law, Annette Albert and numerous nieces and nephews. Dad was born in Winnipeg, the youngest of seven and lived his early years on Flora Avenue. When he was 10 years old the family moved to the farm in Grosse Isle, MB. Dad finished high school in rural Manitoba and continued to farm, eventually moving into his sister and brother-in law's home in the city and commuting daily. He loved to sing and had a beautiful tenor voice. He started singing in various choirs, ultimately singing in the Rosh Pina Synagogue choir where he met our Mom in 1953. On December 27, 1953 they were married and started their family. Dad continued to make choir a priority and derived so much pleasure from it for over 50 years. He participated for many years in the Seniors Stay Young program and choir every Tuesday at the Rady Centre. He worked very hard to support his family through the tough times and then made a risky decision to buy a Sam The Record Man franchise and established the first store in Winnipeg at the Garden City Shopping Centre which he ran with Mom followed by a second location at Unicity Shopping Centre. This proved to be a successful endeavour. He never had a bad word to say about anyone, a true Mensch! He was always surprised that everyone wasn't as honest as he. Devoted to Mom even more in the last difficult years of her life, he came daily to be with her once she entered the Simkin Centre and then he joined her there in July 2011. They had an adjoining room and spent the rest of her days living together. Mom passed away January 2013 and Dad became a frequent participant at all programs held at the Centre. He continued to do this until he recently became too weak to attend. The family would like to thank everyone who looked after his needs and loved him so much. Funeral was held at Etz Chayim Synagogue with interment at Rosh Pina Cemetery officiated beautifully by Cantor Tracy Kasner Greaves. A thoughtful and loving eulogy was given by his granddaughter, Hilary Book. Pallbearers were David Pressman, Murray Gilfix, Greg Gilfix, Warren Book, David Shapera and Perry Gilfix. Donations in his memory will be gratefully accepted at the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre, The Stay Young Program at the Rady JCC, or the charity of your choice.

This evening Max and Molly Pressman came to mind as I was writing about my brother’s suicide in 1978. Your father was sooo kind to me by hiring me full-time. (I was only 16) I now remember his soft counsel. For sure he was reluctant but did so anyway. He saw me drowning in my grief and threw me a lifeline. I will be forever grateful as I now graduate with a high school diploma from Tacoma Community College. Yes, your father was indeed, a mensch. Thank you Max, with all my heart. - Posted by: Joanne Chemin (Employee from unicity Sam the Record Man) on: Jun 07, 2022

I will always remember Uncle Max from the years when he worked on the farm where I grew up. He was such a hard worker! And so strong! I can remember watching him in the truck after he shovelled a load of grain on, and the way the sweat dripped off his nose. I was amazed! I had never seen anyone sweat so much! He was a great guy, never got mad or swore, was always patient with the cattle, even when they were ornery. He had a wonderful voice and sometimes sang while he worked. I miss him. - Posted by: Saul Pressman (nephew) on: Jan 10, 2015

I will always remember Max & Molly when I worked at the Parkway. Later on I paid them a visit at the Simkin Centre. Selma.. your parents were always the most pleasant couple I ever met. Now they are both together and I'm sure Molly is once again saying (Oh Max) then gently smiling & shaking her finger at him. I think of your family often. My thoughts & prayers are with you. - Posted by: Lorna Gray (friend) on: Jan 03, 2015

I remember both Molly and Max as regular sheel goers at Etz Chayim. Then years later I saw Max at the Simkin Centre. He was a devoted husband and caregiver to Molly and a regular attendee at the Centre’s Shabbat services. Max always had a smile on his face, and how he loved to sing. I remember a few months ago I did not see him at Shabbat services, but saw him walking down the hall. I mentioned that I had not seen him at services, and he smiled and said: “I decided to take the day off.” My sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Maxine Zabenskie (friend) on: Dec 24, 2014
