ROGER DUBOIS Roger Dubois, 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30 at St.Boniface Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was active until the last week of his life, working around his home, building carpentry projects for his wife and daughters, and making sure he kept his coffee and breakfast dates with friends and family. Roger was born on January 3, 1934 to Yvonne (Leclair) Dubois and Adonai Dubois. He grew up in Ste. Anne and Hadashville and went to high school in St.Boniface where he decided to go to Normal School and become a teacher. He taught in Balmoral, MB, at Queen Elizabeth School, Nordale School, and was principal at Dawson Trail School in Lorette before deciding to semi-retire and go back to teaching grade four French Immersion at Springfield Heights. He was at his best when teaching children and has influenced a great number of people. Roger met his wife Bev on a blind date and married her six months later, loving her fiercely for the rest of his life. He was extremely proud of his daughters, Nicole and Andrea and loved them unconditionally. His grandchildren, Julian and Sarah gave him great joy, and he was never too old to get down on the floor to play with them. Everyone knew Roger for his joy for life and his sense of humour; he joked with everyoneincluding friends, students, family, even the Palliative care staff looking after him just before he died. Roger enjoyed his time at the Oasis, then Lac du Bonnet, surrounded by his brother, sisters, mother, nephews and nieces. They had sing-a-longs around the campfire, played cards, and worked around the cottage. We still don't know why he bought a boat since it barely touched the water. Roger has championed the fight against cancer and had been an inspiration to all who worked with him. From 1992 to 2013, Roger helped fundraise over $210,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society, first as a canvasser and then as a Multi-zone Leader. Despite suffering a heart attack in 2009, from which he had a full recovery, a broken leg in 2010, and another cancer diagnosis in 2011, Roger remained a phone call awaycontinuously supporting the Door-to-Door Campaign. In 2013, the Canadian Cancer Society granted him the Special Volunteer Award. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 48 years, Bev Dubois nee Strand; his daughters Nicole Dubois (Lance Skoropad), Andrea (Ray) Yuen; grandchildren Julian Shore and Sarah Shore-Dubois; great-grandson Bentley Shore; brother Leo (Adele) Dubois, sisters Germaine Harding and Simone (Leo) Grouette; many special nieces and nephews; and many close friends. He was predeceased by his sisters Agnes and Denise, and brothers Roland and Gerard. A celebration of Roger's life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Interment will take place at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens followed with a gathering of family and friends in the Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Family and friends wishing may sign a book of condolence at www.glenlawn.ca The family wishes to extend its gratitude to St.Boniface Hospital Palliative Care staff for its support in his final days.

  • My sympathy to Bev and the family. I met Roger some years ago at the 'Y' where we worked out in the gym and followed up with a coffee session. A very witty guy and good friend. We will miss him greatly. Sincerely, Bob Phillips - Posted by: Bob Phillips (Freiend) on: Feb 04, 2015

  • Our sincere condolences to the Dubois family. I met Roger and his wife Bev when I bought the house next door to them in 1994. A few days after I had moved in Roger knocked on my door and offered his lawn mower. I hadn't had the opportunity to get at the yard work yet much less purchase a mower. We became friends that day and have remained friends. Roger became a second grandfather to my twin boys. Each and every day rain or shine he would come out and play with my kids. Every meeting started the same way, "Hello boys, listen I've got only about 10 minutes but we could.......... And for ten minutes he would push them on the swings, build a snow man, play catch or simply ask them what they learned in school that day. Did I mention he did this every day, he was simply a wonderful man. RIP Mr. Roger you will be missed and forever be remembered fondly. The Davidson family. • "Some people come into our lives, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never the same." Roger was one of them, he was the most kind, generous and gentle soul we have ever known. We will miss his great smile and sense of humor at our family get togethers... Our thoughts and prayers are with Bev and his family at this sad time; love Toby and Mary Desmarais and family. - Posted by: Toby and Mary Desmarais and family (cousin) on: Feb 02, 2015

  • I met Roger through canvassing for the Cancer Society. He was the zone leader for my area. He was very devoted to this cause. He would actually go out and canvass the streets that he could not find a volunteer canvasser for. (as well as being the zone leader for more then one area.) He was always super friendly and always joking. He seemed like a very caring man...I'm sure he will be missed. My sincere sympathies to all of his family, Lynne Wiebe - Posted by: Lynne Wiebe (canvassing for cancer society) on: Feb 02, 2015

  • So sorry to hear of Roger's passing. I met Roger at the YMCA probably 8-10 years ago. He was always a super friendly gentleman. He would joke around with other members and was always kind and caring. After he stopped coming to the Y I often asked after him to the many friends he made there including Lloyd and Bob. He was a nice man. I'm sure he will be sadly missed by his family and friends. - Posted by: Lisa MacIntyre (friend) on: Feb 02, 2015

  • Extending heartfelt sympathy to the Dubois family on Roger's passing. For 20 years, Roger was a lead residential volunteer during the April community canvass. Roger had a wonderful sense of humor and preferred to be known as a multi zone leader in his Southdale area. He was committed to raising 10K annually and helped recruit volunteers as well as walk multiple routes. In 2013 the Society awarded Roger a Special Volunteer Award! I’m fortunate to have known Roger and his wife Bev and consider him a special friend. I will miss our conversations and regular emails - rest in peace dear friend!
