DEBRA (DEBBIE) ALICE CATHERINE SOMACK (nee CHAPMAN) March 23, 1953 - February 8, 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Debra Alice Catherine Somack (Debbie) on February 8, 2015. Debbie leaves in cherished memory her beloved husband Glen Somack, daughter Jaime Burbank (McKenna and Pyper), son Michael Somack (Tatiana Robinson), brother Ken Chapman (Sandy and Andrew), brother-in law Doug Somack (Donna, Cheryl and family), brother-in-law Alan Somack (Laura, Dorothy and their families) and many friends. Debbie was predeceased by her parents Jim and Roni Chapman and in-laws Mike and Emily Somack. Debbie had a very nurturing and empathetic nature as a mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. No one will forget Debbie's kind and gentle spirit, along with her friendly and comforting ways. She had a remarkable compassion for animals, particularly her Schnauzer's, Bailley, the two Reillys and cat Whimpy. Debbie and Glen's home and cottage were always open to anyone, and when there you always felt special and welcome. It was always a treat to eat her delicious turkey and all the fixings at family gatherings. Mom, we all miss and love you more than words can express. Dad will miss the love of his life. Our family would like to express our thanks and appreciation to the doctors, nurses and other staff at the St. Boniface Hospital, particularly those in the ICU, for their professionalism and compassion during this most difficult time. A celebration of Debbie's life will take place 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. south of the Royal Canadian Mint. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Winnipeg Humane Society, the Manitoba branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada, or the Canadian Diabetes Association. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

Condolences & Memories (23 entries)

  • My deepest condolences to Glen, Jamie and Mike. Debbie's cabin was one of my favorite places to be when I spent my summers in Arnes with Jamie and Mike. She always had a smile and welcomed me in with wide open arms being the youngest of all the kids. My heart goes out to you all the family and heaven just inherited a wonderful angel. Love Sara Ralke and all the Ralke family. - Posted by: Sara Ralke (friend of family) on: Feb 12, 2015

  • My heart breaks for the loss of such a wonderful, kind spirit. The Somack house was always filled with welcomed arms. Loved the long chats, shopping and treats Mrs Somack would feed us. The love she had in her eyes for her children, grandchildren and the love of her life was unmistakable. She leaves a legacy of strength, kindness, and good humour. I wish I could be there with you all in this time of sadness, but please remember all the good-times and memories that celebrate Mrs. Somack. My heart goes out to you Mr. Somack, Jaime, Mike, and girls. xoxoxo - Posted by: Tracey Dean (Family friend) on: Feb 12, 2015

  • So sorry, Glen, to hear of the loss of your life partner. As a child in the same class as you in school, I noticed your kindness and soft heart when it would have been easier to be a bully. My mother-in-law was your Mom's dear friend. Your Mom spoke so highly of you and Debbie and your close relationship. I am praying for you and your family at this heart breaking time. - Posted by: Erma Bergen-Glowasky (school aquaintence of Glen) on: Feb 12, 2015

  • I'm so sorry to hear of Debbie's passing. We were good friends in high school and even then hers was the place to hang out. A group of us female friends would gather there most evenings to drink tea and yak about the events of our day and our lives. Though our lives went in different directions I often think back to those times with much fondness. Rest in peace Deb - you are a very special person. - Posted by: Jan Henley (Childhood friend) on: Feb 11, 2015

  • Glen, Jaime, Michael, Kenny & families: We were so sorry to hear about Deb. She was a wonderful woman with a huge heart. She will leave a giant hole in the family that can only be partly filled with all of your cherished memories. We wish we could be with you but know we hold you all in our hearts. • Jaime and your girls - can't imagine what you are going through....I'm sure it does feel like a blur, going through the motions as you prepare for tomorrow. As you grieve, remember the good times, share stories and don't be afraid to laugh, it's supposed to be the best medicine out there. - Posted by: Kathy Larson (Friend of Jaime) on: Feb 11, 2015

  • Jaime, I was heartbroken to hear about the passing of your Mother. I understand how it feels when the person you want to talk to the most about your loss is the person you lost. Your Mother raised a wonderful family and left you a legacy of love and compassion that you will pass on to your girls. Take care of yourself and your family. I am thinking of you. - Posted by: Terry Letkeman (Friend) on: Feb 11, 2015

  • Our love and sympathies to Glen, Jaime, Mike and extended family. Deb has been our friend for 40 years...and in all that time her smile, her compassion and empathy were always the base of our friendship. I will miss my 'cheerleader', the shoulder that I cried on, the person I went to lean on. (you always knew what to say.) You were much loved and will never be forgotten. May you now have endless Purdy's Chocolates and continue to guide us from above. Love Dale & Tim - Posted by: Dale & Tim Langevin (Friend) on: Feb 10, 2015

  • Hearing of Debbie passing brought great sadness but also reflection. I count myself lucky for having known Debbie and the Somack family for 20+ years. Meeting Jaime & Mike as a teenager was one of the best things to happen to me. Debbie and Glen opened their cabin to all and could always be counted on for good conversation. As a young adult it was a favourite place to hit up for a morning coffee...& cigarette. Even as I moved away from Manitoba...& quit smoking the Somack cabin is always a mainstay to visit when we return. Debbie was an amazing person, she & Glen raised a couple spectacular kids & grandchildren. With each member of my Spruce Sands family that passes I'm reminded how grateful I am that I have had a place to spend my summers and meet such wonderful friends. My heart goes out to Glen, Jaime, Mike, McKenna, Pyper & family. Those who had the good fortune to know Debbie are better for it. - Posted by: Shane Hanson (Family Friend ) on: Feb 10, 2015
