DONALD ARTHUR EDWIN SPENCE September 6, 1934 - February 10, 2015 On Tuesday, February 10, 2015 Don Spence passed away peacefully at Meadowood Manor at age 80. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Regina, two sons, Shaun and Mark (Karen), and two sisters, Marion (Bob) and Shirley (Roy). He was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Alice, and sister Marjorie (Bill). Don was born at St. Boniface Hospital and resided in various locations, along with his sisters in the Norwood area during his youth, including the old St. Boniface Fire Hall where his father was the fire chief. After graduating from high school, Don worked on the railroads for Canadian Pacific Railways before beginning a very long career working for the Manitoba Health Services Commission where he took great pride in assisting the public as Assistant Manager. He met the love of his life Reggie', whom he married in 1965 and raised his family in St. Vital. Don was an avid curler and swimmer and enjoyed cross-country skiing and going for long bike rides. He also spent many summer days at Grand Beach with the family or relaxing in the backyard overlooking the river. Many family members and good friends that knew him since childhood will cherish Don's personality and character, which included honesty, loyalty and a sharp, witty sense of humour. He also had a very giving spirit, as he received an award of recognition from the Red Cross for his countless blood donations over the course of his lifetime. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Meadowood Manor for the kindness and care given to Don during his final two years. Also, thanks to those who have visited Don and gave their support, especially his lifelong friends Don Cassels and Ron Ethier. At his request, Don will be cremated without a funeral or memorial service. In his memory, a donation can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Red Cross. • My sincere condolences to the Spence family. I worked with Don at MHSC for six years during which time we all curled together at the Thistle. A funny note: I used to get rides part way home with Don and let off at Confusion Corner after work--lucky he slowed down! He was a great guy to work with and always good for a laugh. • Our sincere sympathy on the loss of your beloved Don. The last time I saw you two was in the Assiniboine Park Conservatory when I was there with Mom and Ed and I think Lela too. Don seemed to be a man of wit and humor and a real trooper. May he rest in peace free from all pain and suffering. God bless you Regina as you carry on your journey in life.
