JUNE HUNNIE June 29, 1933 - February 15, 2015 With profound sadness we said goodbye to our dearest June. Peacefully at St. Boniface hospital after a brief illness June departed with grace and courage with her loving family at her side. June was a most generous and kind individual, her love spoke volumes to all who knew her. She was a remarkable woman with an incredible zest for life, always pursuing a new project that was fun and thought provoking. June was born in Winnipeg to Lillian and Siegfried Raae-Nielsen, a curious mix of Danish and Scottish ancestry which greatly influenced her life and character. Her Canadian roots went back to the early traders of The Northwest Company who emigrated from Scotland and her Danish family all reside in Denmark to this day including her half sister Hanne. June spent many hours vigorously researching her family tree which inspired her to make wonderful journeys to Scotland and Europe. June grew up in Winnipeg with her younger brother Leander, her Mom and Grandma. Even though times were tough, the tight knit little family lacked for nothing. Music became a big part of her life learning piano at an early age, performing duets in the Winnipeg Music festival and eventually teaching private piano lessons to young students well into her late seventies. In her later years June happily volunteered for the music festival in the rural communities. June loved the Opera and was a regular season ticket holder with the Manitoba Opera for over 20 years. She met and married the love of her life Walter in 1954 and began a new chapter as a wife and mother. June gave her family the most precious gifts of all, her time, energy and love. Even as an exceptional homemaker June was inspired to return to the University of Manitoba and achieve her certificate in teaching. She was a dedicated teacher of the elementary grades for over 25 years in the St. Vital school division. Every one of June's students were important to her. She took great pleasure in following their progress over the years and she never forgot their faces or names. When June and Wally retired they made the move to country life just outside of Lac Du Bonnet. But June was never one for retirement so she continued her career by substitute teaching in the Lac Du Bonnet school division for many more years. Country life allowed June to indulge her gardening skills, her flower and vegetable gardens were plentiful but making wine from freshly picked chock cherries was her unique gift. June became a proud grandmother during those years and had great times dancing, hiking, swimming, sewing and playing cards with her grandkids. But there was one rule that must be followed, the grandkids must be introduced to music. June took great pride instilling a love of music in her children and grandchildren and enjoyed many of their school concerts over the years. She had a passion for reading, watching the space shuttle launches, choosing her favourite horses to win the Triple Crown races and following the championship figure skater's careers. For June each season of the year held a new interest to be explored and enjoyed. It is impossible to fully express our gratitude to the wife, mother and grandmother who made our lives so joyful. We will have her in our hearts all our days and will miss her beyond words. June is survived by loving husband Walter, brother Leander (Evelyn), half sister Hanne, son Scott and daughter Tracy, daughters-in-law Barbara and Elaine, grandchildren and their partners Steven, Georgia (Matt), Laura, Hilary (Kevin) and Blake and many beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews. June was predeceased by her dear son Charlton (Chuck), parents Lillian and Fred, and son-in-law Gary. A celebration of June's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday February 21, 2015 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Winnipeg Music Festival "support the festival" or a charity of your choice. • June was always 'Auntie' June to me. I will always remember Auntie June for her extreme kindness. I will never forget growing up in Libau and when Uncle Wally & Auntie June would visit, they would always come bearing bags of goodies for everyone. I will never forget you Auntie June. My daughter Tanya gave me the book for Christmas with your name printed in it. I will treasure it and your memory forever. - Posted by: Susan Gunderson (nee: Hunnie) (Cousin) on: Feb 19, 2015

  • I am crying as I write this... My youngest daughter is practicing piano... On the very Grand Piano we bought from June... I often think of her when my girls are playing. She was so kind and sincere. It seems unlikely that a friendship would have been birthed from the purchase of a beautiful piano, but she was so inspiring. My own Mother had just passed very suddenly days before we were to finalize the purchase. She was so gentle and patient with me, reassuring me that the beauty of music made in my own home would somehow ease the pain. I believe that today the Heavenly Angels are rejoicing that God has brought his beautiful June home, to accompany them as they sing! Bless all of you. She will be missed. - Posted by: Margo Wilson Kehler (Friend) on: Feb 19, 2015

  • Dear Tracy: Just a note to you and your family to send my deepest condolences. I never met your mother but she sounds like she was a wonderful woman. She must have been as I recall you as being a really wonderful girl. - Posted by: Sidney Macaw (former class mate at Hastings) on: Feb 19, 2015

  • On a music note, I only knew June as Scotty's Mom and shared but a handful of moments with her. The moments must have been significant for as read her obituary it appeared more than familiar. If it had not been for music, I'm afraid I would not have the two dear friendships I enjoy through Scott and Lawence(Butch). - Posted by: Don Mrochuk (Friend of family) on: Feb 19, 2015

  • Scott, I am so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. My condolences to you and your family. - Posted by: Carol Crampton () on: Feb 19, 2015
