JOY ANN STEWART
Born: May 12, 1957
Date of Passing: Mar 24, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOY ANN STEWART May 12, 1957 - March 24, 2015 A nurse died Tuesday and another Angel got her wings. After a short but ferocious fight with lung cancer, Joy passed away at Health Sciences Centre surrounded by friends and family. Her many wonderful co-workers kept vigil night and day during her fight. Joy was predeceased by her parents Anne and George Stewart of Winnipeg and is survived by her brother Wayne and wife Cathy Stewart of Lac du Bonnet, sister Gaye Stewart of New Westminster, British Columbia as well as niece Aysia and nephew Jaden Labram of Winnipeg. Joy graduated from Misericordia Hospital as a nurse in 1984 and worked many years in Emergency before a 2003 transfer to Woman's Hospital Intermediate Care Nursery. Joy loved the babies and guided many into the world on the most difficult day of their lives. The boys were her favourite as one of nature's perfect creations. Joy was a wonderful teacher and stanch defender of her patients, friends and co-workers. One of Joy's fellow nurses got it right when she said, "Heaven got a new Angel today with a heart of gold and the mouth of a sailor". Joy loved the outdoors especially gardening and visits to the cabin at Paint Lake. She also loved travelling with visits to Yuma, Arizona, a welcome winter break. Many visits to more exotic locales were with her best friend Sharon Klassen, who she loved like a sister. Joy was also an avid knitter who made many baby blankets for friends and the woman's shelter. If a person's measure in life is the impact on those they leave behind, Joy was larger than life and will be sorely missed. A celebration of Joy's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. An endowment in Joy's name is being initiated at the University of Manitoba, School of Nursing. Details to follow. In the course of my duties I often met Joy in the nursery or Resus. room. From the moment I saw her I thought I knew her but we could never place it. I stupidly did not ever ask her last name nor her age. Last night I looked at some elementary school pictures I had just received and there we are, grade 2 John M. King school. How ironic and sad that it is too late to share a laugh at ourselves. Joy was one of the people I enjoyed seeing and sharing a story with. I will miss seeing her there. - Posted by: shirley Luczenczyn (co-worker, Children's Hospital Diagnostic Imaging) on: Mar 31, 2015

It was a special day when I could work alongside with Joy in the nursery. I loved her special sense of humor and her contagious laugh. Although we often shared a laugh or two, she was very serious about the loving care she gave to her tiny, vulnerable patients. Although she could be blunt - always approaching matters straight on, she had a soft place in her heart for not only the babies she cared for, but also her family (whom she talked fondly about), her friends, and colleagues. My heartfelt sympathy to her friends and family...Susan Sass - Posted by: Susan Sass ( former coworker) on: Mar 31, 2015

I am very grateful for the support of Joy's wonderful friends and co-workers who showed such love and compassion over these last difficult weeks. The nurses I have had the pleasure to meet are the heart and soul of healthcare and show we are in very good hands. - Posted by: Wayne Stewart (Brother) on: Mar 30, 2015

Joy and I spent some growing up years together and had plans to get together in spring. I am shocked and saddened to hear this sad news. My deepest condolences to Gaye, Wayne and family. Reinforces the point of not just "thinking" about getting together with old friends but actually "doing" it. Rest in peace Joy. ❤ - Posted by: Debbie Bialek (old friend) on: Mar 29, 2015

My sympathies to family and friends. It's been many many years since I have seen Joy and family but do have fond memories of playing together as children. We were neighbors a few doors down. - Posted by: lorraine podworniak (childhood friend and neighbour) on: Mar 29, 2015

Joy, you will be forever missed!!! You have left such an impact on those who had the pleasure to call you friend, family, co-worker. You were larger than life, and your memory, your wit, your knowledge will continue to guide us. I miss our middle of the night talks, and I miss our super chaotic resus shifts that only you were able to laugh the whole night through, as I know you loved the adrenaline!! You were one of a kind and I will miss you always!!! - Posted by: Michelle (Friend and colleague) on: Mar 28, 2015
