Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLIGAYA CUSTODIO BUENAVENTURA It is with sadness that the family of Ligaya Buenaventura announces her passing into eternal life on March 30, 2015. Ligaya was predeceased by her brothers, Dante and Macairog and parents, Zacarias and Victoria. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Loreli; sisters Mely, Meny, Perla and Aida (Ramon and Michelle Aseneta); her brothers Gil (Maryanne) and Rolly Del Rosario (Maria, Nicole); her aunt Eleanor; sister-in-law Luz; niece Angel (Sean, Raven and Haise); nephews Ricky, West and Noel (Gabrielle) and cousins Cholo (Ruby and Wendy), Pempoy (Sean), Hati (Nena, James, Zen, Mesia, Kent, Jun, and Isaac). Ligaya will also be missed by family and friends in the Philippines, Canada and around the world. Ligaya was born on August 2, 1938 in Manila, Philippines and grew up with a passion for the Tagalog language. After graduating magna cum laude, she taught at the University of the Philippines and authored several grammar texts which have been utilized in the Philippine educational curriculum. She created a Tagalog dictionary, translated into English the two seminal novels by Jose Rizal and included Tom Sawyer and Little Women among the literary classics she translated from English to Tagalog. Ligaya inspired a lifelong love for knowledge in the many students she mentored. In Winnipeg, she taught Pilipino at the University of Manitoba and was a beloved teacher at John M. King School and Magdaragat Philippines Inc. Ligaya's commitment to her students continued even after class time ended. She learned dances and songs from different cultures which she shared with her students to give them a better understanding of one another. She established scholarships in the Philippines to assist students through their post-secondary education. Ligaya led the Mabuhay Serenaders through the sweet harmonies of traditional Philippine folk songs and contemporary popular music. She knew no bounds in her creativity. In retirement, she explored painting and different dance forms, remained active with the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba and continued to write. Many in Winnipeg's Filipino community waited patiently for each installment of her stories in The Pilipino Express and The Filipino Journal. Ligaya had courage to pursue what interested her. Her faith was an anchor she relied on when she had doubts and fears. She always remembered her humble beginnings and treated people with respect and dignity. She loved good food, intellectual debates and laughter. But most of all, she loved the company of her family and friends. Ligaya's family would like to thank Drs. Milambiling, Dr. Borys and Team and the 4th and 5th floor staff of Victoria General Hospital for their compassionate care and kindness. A special thank-you to her dearest friends and the daily homecare workers who brightened her days with much love, inspiration and support. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, April 11 at St. Gianna's Church (Winnipeg), and will be presided by Rev. Fr. Darrin J.G. Gurr - ritual of remembrance begins at 9:45 a.m. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

Ms. Buenaventura was my old grade 2 teacher at John M. King school. I remember always hugging her and come out of nowhere and say "Ms. B!". I didn't know she passed until now for in my mind I always thought this wonderful person would never leave and maybe she never did, for as long as we remember her, she never left. Ms. B, I will miss you. - Posted by: Alvaro Faria (Student) on: Nov 01, 2015

My wife Beth and I were former members of Mabuhay Serenaders, it was natural for us to know more about Manang Li. She was very knowledgeable about a lot of things and many genres and she was a very strong leader. Very passionate, very devoted and a hard worker. Naturally we became very close and she became our godmother when we renewed our wedding vows on our 10th wedding anniversary along with Dr. Romy Magsino. However, when we moved to Vancouver in 1995, we lost touch but she remained in our hearts and minds. We will always remember you Manang Li. We will always be reminded of the many things we shared together like our love for music. We love you Ninang Li. But now you'll be happy because you'll be 'at home' with The Lord with Dante. We will continue to pray for you. And please pray for us, too, because we're still here in earth with our projects and struggles in life. I first met Ate Li in 1987 when I was a new member of the Magdaragat Family. I will always treausure and remember her talent and leadership that was remarkably displayed in the quality of performances Mabuhay Serenaders shared on stage with admiring audience. As a person I found her as a genuine and caring individual, it is sad that we will never again witness her creative touches. I empathize with Ate Li's daughter Loreli, sisters, brother, Sister Friend Tita Pearl, cousins, close friends, other relatives and associate for the loss and the grief of losing her. I pray that she is now in our maker's care surrounded by beautiful harmony of singers, singing her beautiful serenades of love. Ate Li may you rest in eternal peace and happiness, remember I will always remember you in the best of light and joy... Felino de Jesus - Posted by: Felino de Jesus (A family friend) on: Apr 06, 2015
