BERTRAND DELAQUIS It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected, yet peaceful passing of our dear Dad at ActionMarguerite on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at the age of 75 years. Pappi or mon oncle Touille was born in Notre Dame de Lourdes on April 22, 1939 to parents Jean and Louise Delaquis. After Graduation, Dad worked briefly for the CN Railway, before joining the Canadian Army where he served in the 3rd Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Germany. He often said that these were some of his best memories. In 1967 Dad was honourably discharged and decided on a teaching career. He earned his B.A. and B. Ed at the University of Manitoba and went on to complete his Masters in Education. Dad spent most of his teaching career at Precieux Sang School in the Norwood School Division. Dad had many interests, such as History, Family Genealogy, Photography and travelling. Dad will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Betty, his son David, wife Mona-Lisa and their children Luke and Daniel, daughter Caroline and son Alain and his children Ryan and Julia. Dad loved spending time with his four grandchildren, especially playing ball and cards. Those were special times for him. The family would like to thank the many nurses and staff at ActionMarguerite for their kindness and care of Bertrand during his brief stay. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernadette's, 820 Cottonwood Road. If friends or family so desire, donations may be made to any Charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (46 entries)

  • M. Delaquis inspired me with a life-long interest in history, and his military service anecdotes inspired me to choose that as a career. Having moved frequently in my childhood due to my father's job, I didn't fit in when I arrived at Précieux-Sang, but M. Delaquis always made me feel I belonged. I think of him often, and am so sorry for those, family and friends, who always had him in your daily lives, he must be terribly missed... He was a great teacher! RIP M. Delaquis. - Posted by: Alia Smyth (Former student) on: Aug 15, 2017

  • Nooooo! I often wondered how he was doing. HE WAS MY FAVORITE TEACHER EVER! If I knew he was at Action marguerite, I would have visited him. He taught History & photography to me and many others, with such passion and a great humour that made learning fun. I defiantly will miss him, and pray for the repose of his soul. R.I.P. Monsieur Delaquis! God Bless You! mrformat@mymts.net - Posted by: Norbert Dupas (Former student) on: Mar 10, 2016

  • Whenever Mr Delaquis spoke we listened, often we laughed, and we never forgot his life lessons. He inspired many of us to enter the teaching profession. Often in situations dealing with students I would find myself thinking, what would Mr Delaquis do. His compassion endures. - Posted by: Ray Gosselin (Former student) on: May 21, 2015

- Posted by: Diane Sabourin (collègue à l'École Précieux-Sang) on: Apr 21, 2015

  • So sorry to hear of "Bert's" passing. He was truly the best and I have fond memories of him as a teacher and of course his "baguette". He was strict but he made the subject interesting and kept us on our toes. His classes were not to be missed. I was speaking with a colleague just this week and had a smile as I recounted memories of this great teacher and how he kept us all engaged and eager. RIP Monsier Delaquis. - Posted by: Suzanne Kiss(Cormier) (Former Student at EPS, Class of '80) on: Apr 20, 2015

My sincere condolences to Bert's entire family. Such a sorrowful loss. As echoed in all previous comments made by Bert's former students, he was a top-shelf teacher, of academics, and the school of life. He inspired us all to be better human beings. He had a way of making the most mundane subject a fascinating one. LOVED and ADORED by all. I speak of him so very often to anyone who will listen to me....the charisma he had is engraved in my brain. Never to be forgotten. His nickname for me was Ti-Jos....one of the only people who could get away with that one. Makes me smile. RIP Bert....much love to you and see you in the next life :) - Posted by: Joanne Trudeau (étudiante EPS, finissante 1992) on: Apr 20, 2015

  • Our deepest sympathy Betty to you and your family. Our thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Ron and Evelyn Van De Walle (Wood) (Former neighbors) on: Apr 20, 2015

  • Mes sincères sympathies à la famille Delaquis. Bert was the best teacher I ever had at Précieux-Sang and it's because of him that I developed a passion for history and geography. He had a way of making history come alive, the Huns on horseback being only one of many examples! He had a unique sense of humour, and I see that many classmates have not forgotten THE baguette! I especially remember the quizzes - for which I would study of course - he'd ask the question and then tell stories and riddle the answers to the class. How annoyed I was, and when I would say to him "Monsieur, arrête de donner les réponses" he would just laugh and play innocent. What fun we had! He will live in our hearts forever. Repose en paix cher Monsieur Delaquis. - Posted by: Hélène (Salmon) Fisette (student) on: Apr 20, 2015

  • He was a great teacher and definitely a positive influence on our lives. - Posted by: Jean Pierrepont Lauzon (Student ) on: Apr 20, 2015

  • Monsieur Delaquis was a diamond in the rough, he picked up the Bebite nickname bestowed upon me, fascinated me with Russian History and his love for photography and let Nicole Gregoire and I eat grapefruits in his class, in spite of his "no food in class rule"...he was a shoot from the hip, tell it like it is teacher and I loved him for that. May he live in Kodachrome peace and may his family always be warmed by the beauty of his legacy of work, impacts on his students and the personal memories he left his loved ones. - Posted by: Sharon O'Leary (Labossiere) (High School.Teacher) on: Apr 19, 2015

  • I was also one of the lucky ones to have M. Delaquis as my history, geography, le droit and photography teacher. He was a great man and my favorite teacher...I took le Droit and photography just because he was teaching it. He was so knowledgeable and funny but was quite strict...always holding his pointer stick behind his head..and slapping it down on his desk if we were dosing off. This certainly kept us in our place but we listened and learned so much from him. He respected his students and in turn we all respected him. He took our geography/history class on a field trip near his home town of Notre Dame de Lourdes in the valley of Babcock and to visit the little town of St. Lupicin, MB ..which is also where my dad was born..he nicknamed me "La P'tite de St. Lupicin." He thought it was so cool that I knew where that little town was and that I used to go to Babcock when I was a little girl. Over the years I would run into him at the airport when he was travelling and he would say..."eh..c'est la P'tite de St lupicin ". Bert, you will always be so fondly remembered by all your students at P.S. Repose toi bien cher M. Delaquis. My most sincere sympathies to the family. - Posted by: Danilla Brunel (former student - class of '81) on: Apr 19, 2015

  • So saddened to hear of M. Delaquis' passing. He was my favourite teacher at P.S. He was one of a kind! Nobody ever wanted to "skip out" of his classes because he made learning fun and we all wanted to be there. His sense of humour was unique and definitely memorable! I still remember his infectious laugh during class. I'm sure we all have wonderful memories that we cherish today as students in his classroom. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Jennifer Chudley (former student) on: Apr 19, 2015

  • M. Delaquis was by far my favourite teacher at Precieux-Sang. "Bert" brought his A-game to our classes, challenged our perceptions and always made us laugh. His kindness and compassion shine in my memories of him. My condolences to his family. Adieu, cher professeur. - Posted by: Sandra Morgan-Colp (Former Student) on: Apr 19, 2015

  • Mes sympathies a la famille Delaquis. Bert was my favorite teacher in high school at Ecole Précieux-Sang. He had the best stories in history class. Forever remembered for his baguette! RIP! - Posted by: Jocelyne LaFlèche-Hébert ((former student) ) on: Apr 19, 2015

  • Life passes by so quickly. I wish I would have thought of the time to look up people who touched my life so dramatically. Monsieur Delaquis was as many students have already stated "the best". His sense of humor was unparalleled. I remember him having great conversations with my father. "Quite the old guy" he would say, because they shared stories about being in the service. I have fond memories of him challenging my artistic abilities and he would constantly hold contest between myself and Fred Lamoureux with our cartoon history title pages. Sometimes I would win, sometimes Fred. What a great man! You will be missed!!!! My sincere sympathies to all the family! - Posted by: Paul Belair (Former student ) on: Apr 19, 2015

  • My deepest sympathies Betty to you and your family. Wonder who he is joking with up there! - Posted by: Monique Roy (Amie) on: Apr 19, 2015

What can I say about this fantastic teacher during my intermediate and high school years? Quite a lot for sure as M. Delaquis had a very fascinating and charismatic personality who had an uncanny ability to command the entire class`s respect and attention with either humour, or with his very serious demeanor when required! I did not know any student who didn`t laugh along with his jokes or that didn`t respect him. How could we ever forget his passion for history and geography and the many handwritten notes written on acetate, which he would have us copy word for word during class! Although these were not perhaps my favorite subjects, M. Delaquis' classes were my favorite to attend! We also enjoyed sharing our mutual love for the farming community of Notre Dame de Lourdes, and I thought it was very cool to be taught by someone who had been in the same class as my dad Norbert! In addition to his teaching skills, M. Delaquis also showed a great leadership and compassion for the well-being of his students outside the class. He was very attentive to the surrounding social interactions, and would not hesitate to come to a student`s defence when he saw something inappropriate take place. I and I`m sure many of my fellow classmates will join me to say that we will always fondly remember 'Monsieur' as we liked to call him! May God grant M. Delaquis eternal rest and peace in Paradise, and may He bless and console you in this difficult time. Guy Dacquay - Posted by: Guy Dacquay, Orléans, Ontario (Étudiant de / Student of M. Delaquis at École du Précieux-Sang (Classe de / Class of 1980)) on: Apr 19, 2015

  • My heartfelt condolences to the Delaquis family. Your father was not only a great history teacher, but a teacher of life. As a young impressionable teenager, Mr.Delaquis was a father figure to me. Coming from divorced parents and not having a male role model in my life, I would admire how he would handle himself in front of us, with laughter, compassion, a real "joie de vivre". Oh! He could be stern and serious but he would always have the time and patience of a saint to make sure you understood, the life lesson he was trying to convey. Thank you Mr Delaquis for making me a better man. Always in my heart from Joe Straight, aka Marc Trudeau class 78 - Posted by: Marc Trudeau (Student) on: Apr 19, 2015

  • M. Delaquis - Bert - was such an amazing teacher and a wonderful man. It's been nearly 30 years since the last time I walked into his classroom but his smile and sense of humour live with me still. He was passionate and patient. Caring and engaging. Brilliant and self deprecating. He touched so many of us and pushed us to care about and engage with the world around us - yet not take ourselves too seriously. He was and is a beautiful soul. Always teaching. Thank you Bert. - Posted by: Dan Waters (Former Student) on: Apr 18, 2015

• I'm so sad to hear of Bertrand passing away. They used to tell me I was Bertrand's personal secretary, because I always did a lot of work for him. He was marvelous to work with. My son Gilles also had Bertrand as a teacher, always told me that Bertrand is the one that made him like history and geography, he was such a wonderful teacher, strict but fair. This certainly brings me back a lot of memories. I'm sure he will be missed. Sorry to hear about his passing. - Posted by: denise gareau (secretary that worked with Bertrand for many many years) on: Apr 18, 2015

  • Bert also known as Toille was a wonderful man which I got to know from going to the same school as me and also when he was driving grain truck on the farm. While in those day was a bit of a wait in between combine tanks to be filled Bert would close his eyes and rest while me and other friend would pitch grain in the cab and would get supper mad at us but then would run to catch us but would wrestle with us but never would hurt a fly. He would come and visit me in Notre Dame while I was working for Delaquis Motors as a mechanic. What a wonderful man. Sympathies to all the family members a great loss. - Posted by: Normand Berard (someone Iknew in Notre Dame) on: Apr 18, 2015
