Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARGOT FUNKE August 17, 1921 - April 18, 2015 On Saturday, April 18, 2015 Margot Funke passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre, at 93 years of age. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Barb Stelter-Lehmann (Ed), grandchildren Michelle Melanson, Michael Stelter, great-grandchildren Ryan, Joshua, Colton, and Jacob, many cherished friends, and special godchild Ruth Pockrandt in Germany. Margot was predeceased by her son Reiner in 1971, brother Hans Arlt in 1975, and husbands Heinz Ruediger in 1984 and Henry Funke in 2014. Margot was born on August 17, 1921 in Berlin, Germany where her loving parents Erna and Gustav Arlt provided a happy childhood for her and brother Hans. Upon finishing high school, she trained and worked as a stenographer, which came to a halt once the war broke out. During the war years, the family was bombed out several times. Near the end of the war she married Heinz Ruediger, and remained in the home to raise their two children. Once the children were older, she worked for many years at the ABC Kredit Bank in Berlin. In 1960 Margot and family immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba. The whole family found work at Uptown Bowling Lanes. Margot successfully juggled work and school. Over the years she was employed by the German Newspaper as typesetter and proofreader, by the Norwood Legion and later by the University of Manitoba as a stenographer. Her work often interrupted by frequent trips back home to Berlin. After Heinz passed away in 1986, she continued to live in the house, eventually moving to Fort Garry Place starting a new phase in life. This new circle of friends introduced her to Henry Funke, whom she married in 1997, when she moved into Fred Douglas Place. With Henry, travelling became a major part of her life; visiting Mexico, Cuba, Hawaii, Europe, and the highlight was always the spa in Germany. Her passions were knitting, baking and cooking, listening to German music and doing German crossword puzzles, which she did until four weeks before her death. Her garden on Elizabeth Road was her pride and joy bringing much satisfaction harvesting huge apples and different types of berries. Her outgoing nature, blessed her with a large circle of friends from Fred Douglas Place, German Society of Winnipeg, and St. Peter's Lutheran Church. It was always her greatest joy to be surrounded by friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her loving and nurturing personality will be missed by us all. Funeral service will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2015 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The family extends sincere thanks to the staff on 3rd floor East Wing at Riverview Health Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice. I am so sorry to hear of Margot's passing. I have such wonderful memories of sleepovers at "Oma's" house on Elizabeth Road with Michelle. I've thought of her often in the past years and I'm so happy that she had so many years to spend with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. I will forever treasure the time I spent with her. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Love, Jennifer (Lie) Harrald - Posted by: Jennifer (Lie) Harrald (Family Friend) on: Apr 22, 2015
