ROBERT BRUCE BEATSON June 27, 1927 - May 25, 2015 After a brief illness and just shy of his 88th birthday, Bruce finally answered the call to return home to be with his Lord. While not afraid, Bruce was torn because he loved his life here and leaving this world would mean leaving the love of his life of more than 62 years, Kathleen Beatson (nee Thompson). Whether in Winnipeg or during their numerous adventures around the world, many of us have been blessed to have witnessed the deep love, devotion and true friendship the two hold. Just days before his departure Bruce looked into Kay's eyes and with pure adoration he said "You know I've loved you from the bottom of my heart and soul my entire life". Not missing a beat, Kay responded "So you are glad you married me then?" A man of strong character and an active volunteer in his community, Bruce was a long time member of the YMCA and raised funds annually for charities including, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Winnipeg Humane Society. Bruce and the outdoors were synonymous. He could be found in his yard tending to his (and if needed his neighbours) grass and flowers, his favourite - red geraniums. He loved canoeing and golf but it was running that brought him tremendous joy. He ran in the Manitoba (half) Marathon into his early 80's. His career was in marketing and sales. Even after retiring from Esso Bruce kept busy with various work projects. Kahani, West Maui, Hawaii was a favourite winter destination for Bruce and Kay and memories. Bruce was always surrounded by caring friends and neighbours. He had a special bond with his K9 buddy Taz. Bruce was predeceased by parents Sophia and Robert Beatson who were born in Scotland. Siste, Barbara Buchanan and Ethal Reesor, He is survived by his "everything" Kathleen, nephews David (Cheryle), Robert (Nancy), Allan (Marie), nieces Alison Stevenson, Margaret Shaw (Brian), Dr. Kathy Keith and Joanne. The family would like to thank: the staff at Victoria General Hospital, Emergency Dept. 5 South, 3 South and the VGH Spiritual Care Team (Lara, John, Alison) for their kind and compassionate care. A celebration of Life will take place Thursday, May 28, 2015, 10:00 a.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). Honourary Pallbearers will be his nephews and nieces and the nephew and nieces of his heart, Nancy Gergely, Emerson and Ken Kollinger, Scott, Marla, Curt and Bue Warkentin, Kate, Mary and Mathew Furgale. In lieu of flowers if desired, a donation may be made to: The Canadian Cancer Society, Winnipeg Humane Society, Victoria General Hospital Foundation and YMCA. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Kathleen ~ Our family is so sorry to learn of the passing of Bruce. Bruce was our father's (Abe Dyck of Winkler) "sales rep" through Esso for many, many years. We have many memories of Bruce joining our family for spontaneous lunches when on his trips to Southern Manitoba. He was a business associate but also a friend to our parents and family. He always took interest in us and even attended our weddings. I know both our Mom & Dad respected the wisdom and expertise that Bruce provided to them in being part of making their business a success. The last time I saw Bruce was while he was running a 1/2 marathon ~ He has crossed life's finish line well. Our sincerest condolences, thoughts and prayers are with you, Kathleen. - Posted by: Jan Neufeld (nee Dyck) (Aquaintance) on: Jun 01, 2015

  • Extending deepest sympathy to the Beatson family - I was deeply saddened to learn of your dear husband's passing. Bruce was a long time volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society's annual door to door campaign. You could count on Bruce to canvass every house on his route and take on extra if needed! Thank you for sharing the beautiful tribute! Bruce was a special volunteer dedicated to causes that were meaningful to him! He will be missed! - Posted by: Lynda Ruban (staff at the Canadian Cancer Society) on: May 28, 2015

  • Bruce was an every day inspiration for many of us at the YMCA. He was always full of energy and optimism. He used to lend me his Running magazines, and I eventually decided to run the Manitoba half marathon. I do remember his last half marathon, it was so great that he finished it! He also brought a lot of joy to all of us at the bike class when he handed granola bars at the end of the class (specially the peanut butter ones). Bruce will be missed by many of us. May God keep him forever joyful and in eternal peace. - Posted by: Ada Chauca (Acquaintance) on: May 27, 2015

  • Bruce was an inspiration to me at the YMCA. I was terrified of joining Spin (Cycling) Class until I saw him there peddling with gusto. Seeing all the activities he participated in throughout his 80s convinced me that I will do the same. He will always be an inspiration for that reason and I am indebted to him for it. Thank you Bruce. You helped me get healthy and I will forever remember your smile and humour. - Posted by: Kevin Hnatiuk (Acquaintance) on: May 27, 2015
