JOHN SCOTT THOMSON April 25, 1940 - June 4, 2015 Scott passed away peacefully at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, Nanaimo, BC on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at the age of 75. Scott is survived by his loving wife, Sheila; his son, Russell (Sandie); his daughter, Shona (Layne) Belvoir; his stepchildren, Garry (Darlene) Stevens, Dan (Gloria) Stevens, and Sandy (Warren) Russell; and his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Colin, and his sister, Jules. Scott was predeceased by his first wife, Pamela, and his parents, Jack and Phyllis Thomson. Scott was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and graduated from the University of Manitoba with a commerce degree. He went on to become a Chartered Accountant, qualified to practice in Quebec, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia. Scott was very much a family man. He coached hockey and baseball with his son and travelled all over Alberta to various figure skating competitions with his daughter. Scott believed in family, strong ethics, and hard work. In addition to his devotion to his family, Scott worked very hard in his career. He was Chief Internal Auditor and Senior Director Tax and Risk Management for Petro-Canada in Calgary from 1984 to 1995. Prior to that, he was a Tax Partner with KPMG Peat Marwick Thorne. When he retired to Nanaimo, he continued to work as a CA with Whiteaker & Associates for several years. A dedicated community volunteer, Scott was both Treasurer and Co-chair of the Professional Division, United Way of Nanaimo and District. He was also the Treasurer of the Nanaimo Branch of the Canadian Diabetes Association. He was a member of both the Finance committee and the Government and Legislative Affairs committee of the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce. In more recent years, Scott was also heavily involved as the Treasurer for the Nanaimo Empire Days Society, in addition to having been the Treasurer of the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce and Treasurer for the Malaspina University (now Vancouver Island University). His past Calgary involvements included: President and Member of the Calgary Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors; Chairman and Member of the Taxation Committee of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce; Chairman and Member of the Canadian Petroleum Association Tax Committee; Director, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Calgary Branch of the Tax Executives Institute; Member of the Alberta Corporate Tax Administration Consultative Committee; Member of the International Fiscal Association - just to name a few. Scott was an avid boater; he enjoyed antique car shows and playing bridge. Scott was always giving advice not just on tax matters, but also on life. His favourite saying was, "Don't forget to turn out the lights. We don't own shares in the electric company". He will be dearly missed by his family and fondly remembered by his friends, colleagues, and all who knew and loved him. Scott's family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Scott's children would like to thank their second mom, Sheila, for the love and care she provided the last few years providing Dad with the best quality of life possible. Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, June 12, 2015 at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1 Newcastle Ave., Nanaimo. Celebration of life to follow at the Branch 256 of the Royal Canadian Legion, 1630 E. Wellington Rd., Nanaimo. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society, or to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation. Sands - Nanaimo
