TODD WILLIAM HINDS
Date of Passing: Jun 13, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTODD WILLIAM HINDS It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Todd, on Saturday June 13, 2015 in Saskatoon. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend to so many around the world. On December 5, 1967, Todd was born to Brian and Irene Hinds. He had great passion and love for his family, friends, pets, music, dance and sports. A gifted athlete from the age of four, with his father as his mentor and personal coach, Todd pursued several sports and always excelled. Hockey was his first, but by the age of 12, the other boys began to grow too big for Todd to compete with. Todd then discovered wrestling; a sport he could compete in pound for pound. Todd excelled in wrestling, from Hammarskjold High School to the University of Manitoba. After graduation, he began assistant coaching with the University of Manitoba. He then accepted the position of head coach with the University of Saskatchewan. Todd's career took off. He continued his studies to become a Master Coach. Todd coached for 17 years. While not coaching the University of Saskatchewan team, he started coaching the Canadian National Women's Team. He traveled the world with his athletes. His personal and professional goal was to go to the Olympics. In 2004, he was the assistant coach for the women's Canadian team in Athens, Greece. Canada's Tonya Verbeek won the silver medal in her weight category. The wrestling world was part of Todd's family. The athletes were his children, who he loved and cared for as he would for his own. Aside from wrestling, he was fanatical about golfing. If he wasn't playing golf with one of his many sets of clubs, the TV was literally on the golf channel, 24-7. His favourite golf buddy was his father. Todd will be forever loved and missed by his mother, Irene Hinds, sister Heather Lynn (Pouru), brother in-law Jari Pouru, and his special nieces Ashley and Heidi Pouru. Todd was predeceased by his mentor, Brian Hinds. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 22, 2015, at the Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Services will commence at 2:00 p.m. A celebration of Todd's life and career will take place in Saskatoon at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies "Coach Todd Hinds Memorial Awards in Wrestling," would be greatly appreciated. Our dearest Todd has gone golfing with his Dad. Growing up in a small town and playing hockey all my life, I gave it a go at learning how to wrestle in my second year of university. Todd was the coach and I remember him asking "are you sure? It's a bit different than hockey!" and not once did he ever treat me with any less respect as a newcomer (with zero wrestling background) than the way he treated the guys on the mats that had been wrestling for years! Years later, Todd was still the genuine, kind, insightful, and the most humble guy in the room when having a chat with him on the mats at a tourney. His innate ability to listen and give insightful words of advice came naturally -- and I will never forget how such a fierce competitor and athlete such as Todd, could be of such kind and genuine character. Todd, your positive attributes will continue to be passed on through the lives of those you have touched and you will be missed deeply. God bless you Todd - Posted by: Jason Kawa () on: Jun 28, 2015

We send our deepest condolences to Todd's family and his world of wrestling friends. We had the privilege of travelling to some of the Canadian and International tournaments and watching Todd in action and spending some time with him after the events. He was always very kind and considerate and would do anything for his wrestlers. As coach for the huskies he created a family with strong bonds between players, parents and anyone who wanted to be part of the group. He will be remembered as someone very special and a great influence in many people's lives. Miss you Todd. - Posted by: Karen and Tony Johb (Parents to Jillian Gallays (wrestler he coached)) on: Jun 20, 2015

From Rock, Paper Scissors World Championships on the bus to the annual Bleach Bowl soccer tournament, Todd always made the Huskies wrestling room a place to build community along with skills in wrestling. His enthusiasm, competitiveness and care for his athletes is what sets him apart. Todd would coach with integrity and treated every athlete, regardless of skill, with the same respect by giving his time and attention to everyone who wanted to learn. The pictures and comments shared over the past few days have been a great reminder of some of Todd's most endearing qualities. I will forever remember the times that Todd's excitement while coaching lifted him to the tips of his toes and either resulted in him fully collapsing into a squat with his head down or jumping repeatedly on the spot. Todd's gentle pat on the back that spoke words of affirmation and encouragement in celebrating victories or suffering defeat, as one of my teammates noted, communicated so much. Todd, thanks for inspiring me as a wrestler and a coach. You will be missed by many. - Posted by: Craig Dubray (Athlete) on: Jun 17, 2015

When I became the “new” smallest kid in Hammarskjold High School Todd joked about passing me the torch. A friendship quickly formed and between Todd and the wrestling coach (Mr. Curtis), they convinced me to suit up in a wrestling singlet and bare my 80 lb physique on the wrestling team. Todd worked with me daily to learn the technique but more importantly Todd also helped me to gain confidence as a person. I wanted to not only wrestle like Todd but to walk the halls as proudly and confidently as he did. He had so many friends and was such a positive influence. You couldn’t spend a moment with Todd and not smile (unless he was squeezing the air out of you on the wrestling mat). Even after a tough match whether he won or lost you would see Todd congratulate his opponent with a smile. Thanks Todd for being such a BIG influence on this little guy. We didn’t get enough of you but I am so grateful for our friendship and the time you gave to me. Don Chesniak - Posted by: Don Chesniak (Friend ) on: Jun 17, 2015
