Born: Feb 18, 1922
Date of Passing: Jun 20, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMAE VERBRUGGE It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Cecilia Mae Verbrugge, at her home on June 20, 2015. Left to cherish Mom's memory are her children Dave (Laura Diane), Leona (Peter) and Glen (Linda); grandchildren Karen (Brett), Ryan (Donna), Amanda, Sean, Charlene, Michael (Coral), and Tyler; great-grandchildren Angela, Joshua, Addison and Zoey; sisters Thelma (Wes) and Merle (Charlie), brother Dennis (Anne); sister-in-law Rosetta; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Mom was predeceased by her husband Maurice in 2009; parents Mary and Cecil Catte; and her brother Stan. Mae was born on February 18, 1922 in Treherne, Manitoba and grew up on the farm. Her childhood home was always bustling with aunts, uncles, and cousins, filled with laughter and an abundance of great home cooked food. She loved the outdoors and was happiest being barefoot, riding her favorite horse, Jack, playing on the sandbars in the Assiniboine River adjacent to the family farm, helping her Dad (whom she adored) with chores, and spending time with her siblings, numerous cousins and neighboring friends. She had an affinity for all animals and they in turn were drawn to her. Mom met the love of her life, Maurice Verbrugge, was married in 1947 and shortly thereafter moved to Winnipeg. She had several careers throughout her life, but the role she enjoyed most was Homemaker. Mae was a caring, loving, kind and gentle wife and mother who loved to cook, bake, sew, knit, craft, can fruit and vegetables and anything else that ensured the family was always well cared for. She was fiercely proud of her family and home and never missed hosting family gatherings for every special occasion, often including various relatives, some of which were welcomed for extended stays over the years. Mom loved her grandchildren dearly and enjoyed caring for them and doing various activities with them during their visits and occasional sleepovers. Mae was involved in various clubs, organizations and church activities throughout her entire life. She knew her neighbours well and fostered many friendships having conversations over coffee. Mae had a healthy competitiveness and excelled at her favourite games of bowling, cards, shuffleboard, and darts. Her life was lived with grace, honesty, and loyalty. She had spunk and an unmistakable feistiness all her life. Mae maintained her independence and lived in her own home until her peaceful death at the age of 93. The children would like to thank Home Care for their assistance and friendship over the last few years. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mae's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 0K6. "We will always carry your memory in our hearts, Mom." David, Leona and Glen, Helen and I wish you our condolences on the passing of your Mum. Living a block down the street from your Mum and Dad during my childhood will never be forgotten, but I appreciated their hospitality even more after we moved away from Winnipeg. Your Mum and Dad always had a place for me to stay when I was in Winnipeg and their house became my home away from home when I was back in my childhood neighborhood. - Posted by: Darrell Catte (Nephew) on: Jun 23, 2015

My deepest condolences David, Leona and Glen on the passing of your Mom. Great memories are still deeply embedded in my mind of good times being babysat by Aunt Mae. My thoughts are with you all during this time - Posted by: Ron De Clercq (nephew) on: Jun 23, 2015
