JOHN ROBERT SHELTON
Date of Passing: Jun 22, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN ROBERT SHELTON It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Robert Shelton on June 22, 2015 at the age of 80. Beloved husband of Grace; loving father to Lori (Keith), Norm (Tracey) and best grandpa in the world to Kirstin and Miranda Bilous, Sam and Ben Shelton, and step-granddaughters Hayley and Taylor Bryksa. He will be missed by his sister Joan, in-laws Betty and Ken, Jo and Len and their families, and many friends. John was born in Winnipeg in 1934. During the war years, his father, a career army officer, was posted in Victoria and Prince Rupert, BC and the family went with him. They returned to live in St. Vital in 1948. John began his career with Manitoba Natural Resources in 1952 doing forestry inventory north of The Pas. He became a Conservation Officer in 1962 - a job he loved. His first posting was to Garland. From there, he transferred to Bield, Winnipegosis, Brandon, Virden, Dauphin and finally to Winnipeg as a Staff Training Officer. Along the way, he and Grace met many wonderful people and had some great times. John retired in 1990 and spent many hours in his workshop making unique creations and sawdust. His favourite time was spent with his grandchildren on the rec room floor helping them with their latest Lego project or telling them stories. John and Grace met in 1953 when they were teens and dated for a few months until he moved to The Pas for his job. They reconnected in 1957, married in 1959 and had 56 wonderful years together. They traveled by RV across Canada and the U.S. and visited many warm destinations in the Caribbean. A trip to Portugal was planned for February, but was not to be. Cremation has taken place and there will be no service. A celebration of John's life will be held for family and friends in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Thank you to the staff at Tuxedo Villa for caring for John during his short stay there and to family and friends for all their support during this very difficult time. Great story teller! What he forgot he created. It was a pleasure to have known him for the short time he was at Cornerstone. - Posted by: Abe Wiebe (Friend from Cornerstone Life-lease Estates) on: Jul 06, 2015

A great person. Even though I lost contact with John I often thought about him. He was one of those officers that played an inspirational role in my career. Condolences to his family. - Posted by: Tim Cameron (Friend/co-worker) on: Jul 02, 2015

Our condolences to Grace, Lori, Norm and their families. Having been close to the Sheltons in our Dauphin days, sharing birthdays, cottage stays, Sunday dinners, parties and more, we are feeling sad this past week. I will share a little story that John loved to tell. One Sunday when our Karen was small, she wanted to know if John and Grace were coming for dinner. I said "No, honey, it's just family tonight" She replied "But John and Grace are family!" So we called them! And they were like family. Having no relatives nearby, they were like aunt and uncle to our young kids. Grace remains family and John remains in our hearts - Posted by: The McColms (friends) on: Jun 28, 2015

John was the Training Officer when I began my career as an NRO. He delivered my first uniform shirts and pants to me in Mafeking. He then supervised 3 of us as we wrote our NRO 3 (NRO 4 now) exam in Swan River. A kind and generous man, John will be remembered through the legacy that he passed on to those who worked with him and under his supervision. Thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. John's life story as written above has been posted on the Manitoba Natural Resource Officers' Association Facebook page. - Posted by: Andre Desrosiers (Former colleague) on: Jun 27, 2015
